ᐅ My KALLAX unit developed stains after polishing – how can I restore an even finish?

I recently treated my KALLAX shelf made of oak veneer with a common furniture polish to refresh the wood tone. Unfortunately, instead of a uniform shine, the polish left some spots and uneven dull areas. The transitions now look quite irregular, almost as if I applied different amounts on various surfaces or if the polish didn’t absorb evenly in some places.

My question is: How can I restore my KALLAX to an even finish after such a patchy polishing, without too much effort or having to sand the whole thing down? Are there any special care products, tips, or techniques to reduce the spots and make the appearance more consistent again?

I would appreciate specific advice, especially from people who have had similar experiences with surface-treated wood or more affordable furniture.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to proceed carefully:

1. Work in a well-ventilated area and use a soft microfiber cloth.

2. Slightly dampen the cloth with some denatured alcohol or isopropanol (70%), do not soak it!

3. First, test on an inconspicuous spot to check if the material is damaged or discolored.

4. Then wipe over the stains with smooth, gentle strokes. Apply only light pressure.

5. Allow the shelf to air dry afterward, avoid heat or direct sunlight.

6. Apply a thin layer of a wax-oil care product suitable for veneered surfaces. It’s best to spread it evenly with a soft cloth until a uniform layer forms.

7. Gently polish the surface afterward until the shine appears even.

This way, you can avoid damaging the veneer by skipping mechanical sanding and harsh cleaners. Caution and patience during cleaning and maintenance are essential.

If there is no mechanical damage, wiping several times with warm water and a little dish soap often helps. Then let it dry and gently treat with a suitable care oil. This often removes stains.

You can do it! 🙂 First, try gentle methods like alcohol and then a good oil – there’s no need to sand everything down right away. It’s really amazing what you can achieve with a little patience. Once you get the hang of it, your KALLAX will definitely look like new again! Don’t get discouraged, it will work out!

If none of this helps, try using a special laminate cleaner. It often removes residue from maintenance products on melamine coatings. Afterwards, treat the surface again with a suitable furniture care product for veneered surfaces.
