Hello everyone, I hope someone here can help me with a rather specific problem: I own several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces with lacquered wood surfaces. Over time, various scratches and small dents have appeared, which are especially noticeable on the lighter finishes.

My specific question is: What methods or products are best suited to sustainably repair scratches and minor dents on Hemnes surfaces without damaging the original finish or causing uneven touch-ups? Preferably with tips on how to prepare and apply the materials.

I have heard about color markers, special wax sticks, or even furniture polish, but I’m unsure which options are truly effective and easy to do yourself. I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or mention the pros and cons of different solutions!

To start off provocatively: In my opinion, all these superficial repair methods often just treat the symptoms. Sure, a wax stick or a touch-up marker can hide small scratches – but is it really a lasting solution? Well, I seriously doubt it. Once the surface is damaged, the real protective layer is gone, and eventually the piece of furniture will be ruined or will start to look uneven.

Therefore, my point is: if you truly care about the Hemnes, it’s better to invest in a professional repainting instead of relying on quick-fix solutions. But I understand that this isn’t everyone’s preference or within everyone’s budget.

Have you ever tried sanding it properly with fine sandpaper and repainting it yourself? It’s hard work, but in my opinion often the cleanest solution.

Hey teomika, I tried the “miracle solution” from the hardware store on my Hemnes dresser: furniture repair wax in different shades. 😎 Just work a bit of wax into the scratch, smooth it out, and let it dry.

Sounds simple at first, but it actually worked really well for me. The important thing is to gently go over it afterward with very fine sanding pads – then the surface looks almost like new again.

Of course, it’s no replacement for a full repaint, but it’s perfect for small scratches and dents. The whole process takes less than ten minutes and you don’t have to wait forever. Give it a try!

I would like to go into more detail here because the treatment of damaged surfaces is often underestimated, especially with furniture that has a specific lacquer finish like Hemnes.

The Hemnes lacquer is typically a satin-matte, pore-penetrating finish on spruce wood. When dealing with scratches, you first need to assess the damage: superficial minor scratches can often be treated with furniture polish or a special lacquer care oil, which slightly darkens the area and provides protection.

- For deeper marks, I recommend gently roughening the damaged area first with very fine sandpaper (at least grit 400 or finer).
- Then, retouch the area with a color-matched, thin wood lacquer applied from a spray can or a small brush. It’s important to ensure the color tone matches; you may need mixtures (advice is often available from specialized dealers).
- A light sanding between coats after drying is recommended to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Products like wax sticks are more of a last resort for uneven surfaces. When dealing with lacquered surfaces, patience and proper preparation are key. I’m curious—have you closely inspected the surface to see how deep the scratches really are? That significantly influences the choice of method.

Hello teomika, I understand that many people particularly appreciate the nice finish on Hemnes furniture! I have some similar pieces at home myself and have found the following approach to be reliably effective:

- Clean the surface with a mild detergent to remove dust and grease.
- For small scratches, I like to use a color-matched wax stick (usually in tones like spruce or birch, depending on the piece).
- Gently work the wax stick into the scratch and remove any excess wax with a soft cloth.
- For larger blemishes, sometimes very fine sandpaper can be used, but with great care to avoid damaging the finish over a wide area.

If you have no experience, try practicing on an inconspicuous spot or a less visible part of the furniture first to get a feel for the material and color tone.

If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide.

Short and straightforward: The best way to conceal scratches on Hemnes surfaces is by using furniture wax from a hardware store. Solid-colored wax sticks often don’t work well because the finish has a slight gloss, and wax appears duller.

If the scratch is deep, carefully sand and repaint. Otherwise, try polishing or applying furniture oil.
