Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to buy some Kallax shelves from IKEA for my terrace and am wondering if these shelves can be used outdoors. My specific question is: How well does a Kallax shelf actually withstand rain if it is left untreated outside? Are there any practical experiences or recommendations on how to best protect the furniture from moisture in case it gets wet? I am especially interested in whether the panels swell or if the appearance changes significantly, and which measures are advisable in the long term if you want to use the shelf not only decoratively but also functionally outdoors.
I look forward to your insights and tips!

From a professional perspective:
Kallax furniture is not designed for outdoor use. The chipboard with a melamine surface offers some resistance to splashes, but prolonged moisture or direct exposure to rain will cause significant swelling and damage to the material.
Surface treatments can only delay damage, not prevent it. Edges and drill holes are particularly vulnerable.
For outdoor use, solid wood doors or garden furniture with appropriate impregnation, plastic, or metal are more suitable.
If Kallax is used outdoors nonetheless, I recommend a weather-resistant base, regular maintenance, and a separate cover during rain. Otherwise, irreparable damage can occur within a short time.

I completely understand that you want to be flexible with the Kallax shelves on the terrace.
This also encouraged me in my situation to place the cabinet away from direct rain.
What’s important to me is that furniture is not only functional but also creates a space where you feel comfortable. If the shelf does get wet, I would definitely wipe it quickly with a dry cloth to prevent mold.
Sometimes it’s a fine balance between practical use and material care. It’s great to be able to share these experiences here. Thanks to everyone!
