Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to buy some Kallax shelves from IKEA for my terrace and am wondering if these shelves can be used outdoors. My specific question is: How well does a Kallax shelf actually withstand rain if it is left untreated outside? Are there any practical experiences or recommendations on how to best protect the furniture from moisture in case it gets wet? I am especially interested in whether the panels swell or if the appearance changes significantly, and which measures are advisable in the long term if you want to use the shelf not only decoratively but also functionally outdoors.
I look forward to your insights and tips!

Hello franco59,
Your question about using the Kallax shelf unit outdoors can be answered by first considering the material composition. Kallax is made of particleboard with a melamine coating. This coating is not waterproof, only splash-resistant.
If rain falls directly on the shelf, the boards can swell, especially at edges and joints where the coating is thinner or may be damaged. This not only causes visual damage but also reduces stability.
Here are a few tips if you want to use Kallax outside:
1. Placement: Do not leave it directly in the rain; if possible, keep it under a roof or covered balcony.
2. Additional protection: Use a weatherproof cover during rain or seal the shelf with a polyurethane-based wood varnish. These coatings create a waterproof layer and can help repel some moisture.
3. Cleaning: Wipe off any moisture quickly to prevent mold and swelling.
4. Alternatives: If you expect regular exposure to moisture, furniture made of plastic or metal is more suitable.
In summary: Kallax will not withstand rain long-term without protection.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Hi everyone,
“Good furniture is like good friends – they don’t like getting wet.” ;-)
Jokes aside: Having a Kallax outside in the rain is like wearing shoes for swimming – technically possible, but not really practical. Even if the shelving unit looks sturdy, it doesn’t handle moisture very well.
If you still want to try it out as an experiment, I can only suggest placing the shelf on feet or casters so it doesn’t stand directly on a wet surface. A tarp or some kind of waterproofing can also help, but be careful: Not every sealant works well with the melamine surface.
So, Kallax is mainly meant for indoor use, but with a bit of creativity, almost anything is possible. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the helpful contributions so far!
This information is especially important because I was considering using the Kallax under a sunshade for flower pots. Of course, it could get wet in the rain sometimes.
Are there any special paints or sealants you would recommend for Kallax? Or are such efforts mostly wasted because the board will absorb moisture from the inside anyway?
I would appreciate it if someone has already tried specific products.

Hello franco59,
There are certainly products that can help improve moisture resistance, but options are limited for furniture made from particleboard with a melamine coating.
1. Two-component polyurethane (PU) coatings are a good choice for outdoor use, as they form a hard, water-repellent layer. However, make sure to sand the melamine surface thoroughly beforehand to ensure proper adhesion.
2. Alternatively, breathable acrylic-based wood stains are useful because they allow moisture to escape from the inside while still providing protection.
3. Ensure that all edges and cut surfaces are treated very carefully, as these areas are the most vulnerable to moisture penetration.
Important: Even with the best moisture protection, it is not possible to completely prevent water ingress in extreme conditions. Therefore, if possible, cover or shelter the shelf during heavy rain.
Conclusion: Sealing extends the lifespan outdoors but does not replace the protection needed against prolonged rain or standing water.
Good luck!
