Hello everyone, I’m wondering if the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit is suitable for long-term use outdoors. I’m especially interested in knowing what temperature ranges the KALLAX wood or MDF panels can withstand without sustaining permanent damage. Are there any experience-based insights or official information on this? I’m asking because I have a terrace where temperatures can drop below -10°C (14°F) in winter and can rise above 30°C (86°F) in summer. Would the shelf remain stable under these conditions over time, or should I consider a different option? Thanks in advance for any advice!

The KALLAX is not suitable for outdoor use. Temperatures below zero can cause the panels to swell and warp. It is generally intended for indoor use.

Hello ja-mo, basically the KALLAX shelves are made of engineered wood panels designed for indoor use. The sensitive MDF or particleboard materials cannot withstand constant moisture or extreme temperature fluctuations. Temperatures below around 0°C (32°F) can make the material brittle, while high humidity can cause swelling and warping. Prolonged direct sunlight may also dry out or discolor the material. If you want to use the shelf permanently outdoors, you should definitely protect it from rain and ideally place it in a covered, wind-protected spot. Regarding temperatures: unfortunately, there is no official temperature specification from IKEA, as the product is intended solely for indoor environments.

In short, KALLAX cannot withstand temperatures below freezing on a permanent basis. If you expect temperatures below 0°C (32°F) outdoors, it will swell and crack.

Your question immediately made me think of my terrace – I once left a KALLAX outside during winter because I was temporarily using it as a planter. After the winter, the fun was over; the panels showed visible water damage and were quite warped. 🙂 So for outdoor use: better not. There are cooler, more durable alternatives for outside that can also handle sun and frost!

KALLAX is for indoor use only. Frost and moisture cause the panels to swell and crack.
