ᐅ My KALLAX shelf is warping due to flower pot saucers underneath – any solutions?

ColtmanHello everyone,
I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit: I often place flower pots on it and use coasters to catch the water. However, some areas of the wood are still swelling, probably due to constant moisture or dampness that manages to penetrate the surface. I know that KALLAX is not waterproof, but I expected the coasters to prevent this problem.
Does anyone have experience with effectively preventing swelling caused by flower pots with coasters? Is it enough to change the coasters more frequently? Or are there specific sealants or protective treatments I can apply? I want to preserve the shelving unit as long as possible and avoid quick damage.
Thanks a lot for your advice!

The problem usually arises because water seeps through thin gaps or areas despite using a coaster, allowing it to penetrate the wood over time.
A good solution is to treat the KALLAX with a water-repellent sealant (e.g., clear varnish or furniture oil). Be sure to seal all edges and the bottom surfaces. Make sure the sealant is suitable for MDF wood.
Additionally, coasters should be chosen so they not only catch water but are completely leak-proof, preventing any runoff along the coaster edges.

Hello!
As you mentioned, the KALLAX shelf is not waterproof because it is made of lacquered MDF. Even when using coasters, moisture can easily accumulate on edges or corners during daily use—especially if small amounts of water run down the pot edge or if the humidity level is high.
To prevent swelling over the long term, I recommend the following:
1. Regularly check and clean the coasters: always remove any water residue immediately.
2. Apply a special sealant: a clear varnish suitable for furniture acts as a protective layer. Make sure to coat all sides thoroughly (including bottom edges).
3. Choose plant containers with fully sealed drip trays: preferably made of plastic or ceramic.
4. Alternatively, use waterproof covers: some people place plexiglass sheets on top of the display shelf.
These steps can significantly reduce the issue. The shelf is not designed for heavy moisture—more for normal indoor humidity and careful watering. If you have several plants on the KALLAX, it makes sense to adjust the setup so that not all pots rest directly on the surface but on small feet.
I hope this helps you out 🙂

I can definitely understand how frustrating this is. It happened to me as well when I was too careless with watering my plants. You feel somewhat powerless because you’ve already tried everything you can think of to protect the shelves.
What helped me was regularly wiping them down and patiently testing different types of drip trays. Sometimes the damage isn’t immediately visible, but small water puddles on the surface can cause harm over weeks.
Don’t give up too soon. Some damage only becomes apparent when it’s already too late. However, with sealing and consistent maintenance, the shelves usually last longer than you might expect.
