ᐅ Kallax units are always slightly uneven in older houses – is that a problem?

neixluHello everyone, I bought a Kallax shelf and set it up in my old apartment. I noticed that, despite careful leveling, the shelf always stands slightly crooked. The floors and walls here are not really straight, which I’m familiar with in older buildings. My question is: Is it problematic if a Kallax shelf remains slightly tilted over time? Could this affect its stability or cause damage in the long run? I want to avoid the shelf tipping over eventually or the shelves warping. Maybe someone who knows about this type of furniture and the conditions in older buildings can give me advice on how to handle it best.

Is it a problem if a Kallax shelf is permanently slightly tilted?Hey, good question! 😊 A slight tilt in furniture is often unavoidable in older buildings since walls and floors are rarely perfectly straight. As long as the shelf is stable and doesn’t wobble, it’s not a big issue. Imagine a few millimeters of tilt actually help the furniture adapt rather than “fight against nature.” The important thing is to securely fix the shelf in place, especially for taller models, so nothing tips over. A little tilt doesn’t harm stability—in fact, too much movement does 😉
As a general rule, Kallax shelves are designed for stable, flat floors. If the furniture remains permanently tilted, uneven load distribution over time can cause deformation and stress in the material.
I would recommend:
1. Check the degree of tilt using a spirit level.
2. If possible, compensate for minor unevenness with furniture shims or thick felt pads.
3. For more significant tilting, adjustable furniture feet or wall mounting can help stabilize the shelf.
This way, you avoid future damage and extend the shelf’s lifespan.

uneven loading can cause deformationsExactly, the shelf could warp over time. Simply align and secure it – that is usually sufficient.
A brief summary:
- Kallax features a modular design, making it fairly sturdy.
- However, wooden carcasses can be affected by continuous loads and unevenness.
- Tilting leads to uneven stress on the connection points.
Tip: Use brackets to secure the unit to the wall, especially in older buildings with uneven floors. This increases safety and prevents the panels from warping. You can also use furniture shims between the floor and the shelf temporarily or permanently to compensate for inclines.

I want to avoid the shelf tipping over or the shelves warping over time. The best way to prevent this is with a simple wall fixing. IKEA offers suitable brackets for Kallax units – they are quick to install and very effective. You hardly notice them, but the stability increases significantly, even if the floor is uneven. And yes, a slight tilt is often barely visible – so you get the best of both worlds!
