Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: What is the best tool to tighten the screws on an IKEA KALLAX shelf?

I’m mainly concerned with tightening the screws so that the shelf remains stable and secure, without damaging anything from overtightening.

Has anyone had experience whether it’s better to use a traditional screwdriver, a cordless drill with torque control, a hex key (Allen wrench), or maybe a special tool?

I would appreciate detailed opinions and tips, especially if you could include advice on being careful with the material when tightening.

It's fantastic to see so much discussion about what seems like a simple topic! 🙂

I would definitely recommend everyone to use a cordless drill with torque control! It makes tightening screws almost effortless and protects the shelving from damage!

You can even set the torque precisely to the required level, which gives real confidence that nothing will break!

Glad you brought up this topic; it really helps beginners get the support they need!

Hello berkaychen!

Very good and precise question, this really helps with troubleshooting! For tightening the screws on the KALLAX, I definitely recommend a cross-head screwdriver of the appropriate size (usually PH2).

It is important to apply moderate force and consistent pressure to avoid damaging the wood. If you have a cordless drill with adjustable torque settings, this is also ideal because you can control the amount of force applied.

Please avoid fully automatic modes without torque limitation. This can cause the screw to be driven too deeply into the material, which may cause splintering in the KALLAX.

Additionally, it can be helpful to check the screw connections about every six months and carefully retighten them, as particleboard can loosen slightly over time.

I completely agree! A few years ago, a screw was overtightened because the cordless drill was set to maximum power – it was a disaster. Since then, I always pay attention to the torque.

It is important not only to choose the right tools but also to use the correct technique.

I have often seen people just blindly go at it with a cordless drill. Over time, this damages the shelves.

You should always start by gently positioning the screw by hand to ensure it goes in straight, then tighten it with controlled torque, and finally double-check with a screwdriver.

This is the method I have found to work best, and so far, I haven’t had any problems.

Thank you all for the detailed feedback! I found the tips from AMELIE and FELOTAU about the torque on cordless screwdrivers and the risk of stripping threads particularly helpful.

So far, I’ve only had a basic cordless screwdriver without torque control. I’m now thinking of either buying one with adjustable torque or being more careful when tightening screws manually with a screwdriver.

Do you have any recommendations for brands or models that work well for this kind of furniture? Not too expensive, but precise.

For household use and IKEA furniture, I recommend entry-level models from Bosch Professional or Makita with adjustable torque settings. These are often durable, precise, and cost around 60-100 euros.

It’s important to read the user manual before use to set the torque correctly. This helps prevent damage.
