ᐅ KALLAX and Crumbs in the Cavity – Cleaning Without Removal?

Hello everyone, I recently got a Kallax shelf from Ikea, and in everyday use, I’m increasingly bothered by small crumbs and dust buildup inside the compartments. The thing is, you usually can’t easily remove the shelf, and fully emptying and moving it isn’t an option for me since it’s fixed to the wall and loaded with many items.

My question to you is: How do you clean your Kallax compartments effectively and thoroughly without having to take the shelf apart or empty it completely? What tricks or tools do you use to reach stuck crumbs or dust inside the compartments with minimal effort? Are there any special cleaning methods or devices that have proven particularly useful?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips to solve this issue as simply and sustainably as possible.

Handheld vacuum with a long, thin nozzle plus a microfiber cloth = perfect for these spots. Can be done entirely without dismantling.

I think a Kallax shelf has a bit of a treasure chest vibe. It tends to collect crumbs now and then, but with some patience and the right tools, it’s easy to clean up quickly. A small soft brush or even a painted fan brush from a craft store works wonders. 😉

You don’t have to empty the entire shelf all at once—you can tackle it bit by bit and enjoy a relaxed break from everyday life. And hey, a few crumbs are just part of life, right? 🙂

I can understand well how annoying that is. You don’t want to take the shelf apart, but you still want to keep it clean. I did something similar to

and then I use a small soft brush afterwards as well.

I think it’s important not to rush but to take your time consciously. Doing small regular maintenance saves you from having to clear everything out completely. It also helps avoid frustration :-)

Thanks in advance for all the tips, especially the idea of using a compressed air sprayer sounds interesting.

Are there any specific products recommended for cleaning furniture, or will any type of compressed air work? I ask because I’ve only encountered these in the PC field so far, and the cans often have a lot of pressure, which could potentially damage furniture.

Also, I’m curious if anyone has experience with removing crumbs from compartments that are partially blocked by decorative boxes or other items? I can’t always take everything out.

Standard compressed air from electronics suppliers is usually sufficient and causes no damage, as long as you keep a safe distance and don’t focus the air pressure on one spot for too long. This is not an issue with KALLAX furniture, as the wood can tolerate it well.

For compartments with items inside, I recommend small flexible brushes or a vacuum cleaner attachment with a flexible hose – this way you can loosen crumbs without having to remove everything.

I had exactly the same problem. What helped me was clearing small sections and then using an adjustable duster or a telescopic brush to carefully move dust and crumbs out.

Sometimes it also helps to regularly wipe those small items themselves, so the larger shelving unit doesn’t get as dirty. I know it’s not always easy when you have many decorative or storage boxes, but it helps a bit.
