Naugenevi22 May 2023 08:17Hello everyone, I rearranged my KALLAX shelf, but I noticed that the back never sits flush against the wall – there is always a small gap at the back, no matter how I position it. Now I’m wondering if this is normal or if there is a way to adjust or align the shelf so that it sits directly against the wall. I’m using it in the living room, the wall is straight and the floor is level, but the gap remains. Has anyone else experienced this or have any tips to eliminate this space? Thanks in advance!
Hello Naugenevi2, basically I can tell you that this issue with KALLAX shelves is quite common, especially if the floor or wall is even slightly uneven. KALLAX is generally quite stable, but the back panel is usually not load-bearing; it’s rather thin and can easily bend or stick out slightly.
I always recommend the following approach:
1. Check both the wall and the floor with a spirit level; even a small deviation can cause the shelf not to sit flush.
2. Make sure that the floor height matches the wall height (sometimes baseboards or minor unevenness are the cause).
3. Often it helps to attach small felt pads or narrow wooden strips (1-2 mm thick) to the back panel so the furniture no longer wobbles but rests evenly against the wall.
Could you tell me if your back panel is still original and undamaged, or if maybe a thinner replacement panel has been installed? I’m also interested in the dimensions of your room, as sometimes older walls are slightly tilted, and the shelf is level, which can create such a gap.

The points mentioned by Surela are important. Additionally, KALLAX shelves often have a thin hardboard or plywood panel as a backboard, which may not be completely flat and can be slightly warped.
Furthermore, the shelf is usually equipped with adjustable feet to compensate for minor unevenness. If you haven't installed adjustable feet yet, they might help to stabilize the shelf and keep it flush against the wall.
If the shelf only wobbles slightly, you can use screws or brackets to bring the back panel closer to the wall, minimizing the gap.
In summary: check the adjustable feet, measure the floor level, and inspect the back panel.

Hey, I totally understand! My KALLAX also always had a small gap to the wall. I simply glued a narrow piece of wood cut to size to the back, which rests against the wall. You can hardly see it, and it holds really well! 🙂
Sometimes you have to get a bit creative, but it works really well. The important thing is that the shelf is stable and secure so nothing tips over.

Can you say if your back panel is still original and undamaged? Yes, the back panel is original and without any damage.

Check the adjustable feet The adjustable feet are an interesting point, I set up the KALLAX without any feet – are there official feet from Ikea or just alternative furniture gliders?
I also checked the wall and floor yesterday with a spirit level – the floor is almost perfectly level, and the wall seems straight as well.
What I noticed is that the shelving unit stands on a thin carpet, maybe that also plays a role? How much can soft surfaces affect such gaps?
A carpeted floor can definitely cause furniture not to sit flush against the wall. The soft surface allows the shelf to sink slightly or wobble, which creates a gap at the back.
I would recommend placing the shelf temporarily on a hard, level surface and measuring again. Adjustable feet can also help, as they maintain a consistent clearance from the floor. IKEA sells suitable adjustable feet for the KALLAX, but hard plastic furniture gliders are another option.
