Hello everyone, I recently accidentally wiped my Kallax shelf with a damp cloth – to be exact, some water got on the surface while I was cleaning it. My question is: Can such an accident cause serious damage despite the laminate coating? How resistant is the material really to moisture, and are there typical signs to watch for in order to take early action? I would appreciate any experiences and assessments.
I see this a bit more nuanced. Of course, melamine-coated particle boards are moisture-resistant to some extent. However, I wonder if reports of Kallax damage due to moisture also include cases where users were careless, for example, leaving water standing on the surface for an extended time. I would recommend closely monitoring the furniture for signs of stress, bubbles, or discoloration, as these are typical warning signs. Are there any concrete experiences from other users who have had negative experiences?

I would recommend closely monitoring the furniture for any signs of stress, bubbles, or discoloration Thanks for the advice, I will definitely do that. Is there a recommended time frame in which such potential damage is best noticed? For example, immediately after moisture intrusion, or can it become visible only weeks later?Hi Melopin, don’t panic! A little water is definitely annoying, but usually not a big deal – it’s a bit like ‘Kallax is taking a quick bath today, but stays cool’ 😉 Just dry it quickly and ventilate well, and your shelf will remain a hero against moisture. Only get concerned if you start to see bubbles or other unsightly changes. Until then: stay relaxed! 🙂
Very good point from meGreg. I would like to add: If you are careful and don’t soak the shelf with wet cloths, everything should be fine. After all, a shelf is not designed for swimming pool action, but a little water won’t do much harm to the Kallax. After wiping, just let it air out calmly, and a bit of gentle care now and then never hurts 😉
