Hello everyone,

I am currently considering whether to place my new aquarium directly on an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit instead of using a traditional aquarium stand. My question to the community is: Who has already used the KALLAX shelf as a base for an aquarium?

I am especially interested in stability, load-bearing capacity, and any experiences with moisture exposure affecting the wood or cabinet.

How did you prepare or modify the shelf? Did you encounter any issues with the weight, need for special reinforcements, or perhaps damage caused by water?

I would be grateful for any honest experiences to help me make a well-informed decision!

Hello Benlukman,

I have my 60-liter (16 gallon) aquarium placed on a KALLAX shelving unit. At first, I was unsure because the wood isn’t really designed for heavy loads. After a few months, I can say it remains stable as long as you make sure the weight is well distributed and the floor underneath is level and firm.

What worried me was moisture: I placed a waterproof mat under the aquarium to catch any moisture and prevent it from soaking into the shelf. This helps avoid long-term damage to the material. Small water splashes during maintenance should not be a big issue either.

But let’s be honest: for very large or heavy aquariums (over 100 liters / 26 gallons), I would personally recommend a sturdier piece of furniture. For small to medium setups, though, the KALLAX is really an affordable and practical solution.

Hello Benlukman,

I would like to share my experience in more detail, as I have used several KALLAX shelves as aquarium stands myself. Although the MDF wood material of the KALLAX is not primarily designed for high moisture exposure, with proper preparation it works surprisingly well.

1) Load capacity: A single KALLAX compartment can hold about 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs), while the entire unit can obviously support much more depending on its dimensions. It is important not only to align the shelf against the wall but also to adjust the feet before use to ensure it stands completely level.

2) Preparation: I sealed all surfaces, especially the edges inside the compartments, multiple times with clear waterproof varnish to prevent water penetration. Additionally, I recommend placing a sturdy glass plate or a mat directly under the aquarium to minimize pressure points.

3) Furniture feet: Adjustable furniture feet or small spacer blocks were very helpful in case of uneven floors.

4) Water risk: The KALLAX is not suitable for constant moisture. Therefore, regular maintenance, avoiding direct water contact, and possibly using small drip trays or underlays are advisable.

My conclusion: For medium-sized aquariums up to about 80-100 liters (21-26 gallons) in plastic tanks or with well-sealed bases, the KALLAX works well as an affordable and attractive cabinet stand. For glass tanks and heavier weights, be sure to use additional reinforcements or stronger models.

How large is your aquarium? That could influence the setup recommendations.

I have a 54-liter (14-gallon) tank placed on a KALLAX unit, with no problems so far. I simply put a rigid foam board underneath to distribute the pressure.

For clarification: The KALLAX shelf is made of laminated particleboard/MDF, which is relatively sturdy but not designed to withstand constant exposure to moisture.

I explicitly recommend:
- Applying a waterproof sealant to the interior surfaces and cut edges (edging tape, varnish) before use
- Distributing the load evenly, avoiding point loads
- Preventing any direct water pooling on the surface

Regarding structural capacity: According to the manufacturer, an 80 x 77 cm (31.5 x 30 inches) KALLAX has a maximum load capacity of about 30 kg (66 lbs) per compartment. A 60 x 30 x 30 cm (24 x 12 x 12 inches) aquarium filled with water (approximately 54 kg (119 lbs) plus contents) exceeds this load per compartment, which means supports or additional reinforcements are necessary.

For small nano tanks or lighter plastic tanks, the KALLAX is often sufficient, but a detailed assessment is recommended.

Hey, I love using my KALLAX as a stand for my aquarium! I combined two compartments so my larger 80cm (31.5 inch) tank fits perfectly.

The shelf unit is not only sturdy but also looks really stylish! I added self-adhesive rubber strips to the edges to protect it from moisture.

Quick tip: I always put a drip tray under my tank in case of spills. This way, the wood stays dry.

That’s brilliant! 😉 I can definitely recommend the KALLAX if you prepare it properly.
