Hello everyone,
I am currently wondering how well the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit holds up against moisture, especially from wet shoes. My shoes often end up slightly damp in the compartments, and I’m concerned whether the wood or the surface might get damaged, for example by warping, swelling, or stains.
Does anyone have long-term experience with whether wet shoes negatively affect the stability or material of the KALLAX? And what preventive measures can be taken to avoid damage?
Thank you for your opinions and tips!

Hello Matida,
From my experience, the KALLAX shelf is made of particleboard, which is melamine-coated but not waterproof. If shoes stay damp on it for a long time, the moisture can definitely damage the material – especially at the edges, where swelling or discoloration may occur.
I recommend always using a water-resistant mat or some kind of moisture- and dirt-resistant liner inside the compartment to prevent moisture from coming into direct contact with the shelf.
If there are already stains or swelling, sometimes lightly sanding the affected area and then sealing it with clear varnish can help.

I recommend always using a water-resistant underlay or placing some kind of moisture- and dirt-resistant liner inside the compartmentI completely agree with that. Especially when dealing with wet shoes regularly, a simple underlay is a great help.
I always find it a shame when furniture gets damaged just because protective measures were forgotten.
Matida, have you tried putting a washable mat or even a piece of rubber in each compartment? That also helps keep moisture at bay and is easy to clean 🙂
Hello Matida,
to properly assess the impact of wet shoes on the KALLAX, we need to consider the material structure. KALLAX is mostly made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard, coated with a thin layer of melamine resin. This surface is water-resistant but not waterproof or sealed. If moisture is present for an extended period, it can penetrate the material through joints and edges by capillary action, causing swelling or loosening of the bonds.
If you occasionally place damp shoes inside, I recommend:
1. Using a waterproof mat or liner, for example made of plastic.
2. Drying the shoes before storing them, at least as much as possible.
3. Weekly checks for moisture in the compartments and cleaning/drying if needed.
If you like, you can also apply a thin water-repellent treatment designed for furniture surfaces, which offers some protection against moisture – but it is not 100% waterproof.
One more question: How wet are the shoes typically? Just slightly damp after a short rain, or really wet with mud? That makes a big difference regarding the risk to the shelving unit.

I once had a similar problem. After a walk, I put slightly damp shoes into the KALLAX, and after a few weeks, I noticed slight discoloration and a flaky surface on the bottoms of the compartments.
The best approach is really to let the shoes dry for a few minutes beforehand or to place them on a waterproof mat.
It always frustrates me how carelessness with small everyday things can quickly cause avoidable damage. I still hope your shelf is unharmed!
