Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: What is the best tool to tighten the screws on an IKEA KALLAX shelf?

I’m mainly concerned with tightening the screws so that the shelf remains stable and secure, without damaging anything from overtightening.

Has anyone had experience whether it’s better to use a traditional screwdriver, a cordless drill with torque control, a hex key (Allen wrench), or maybe a special tool?

I would appreciate detailed opinions and tips, especially if you could include advice on being careful with the material when tightening.

Bosch Professional or Makita entry-level models with torque settings are often durable, precise, and cost around 60-100 euros.

Absolutely, and they’re really fun to work with! 🙂

If you want to treat yourself, also check out the Bosch IXO—they are handy and great for those fine tasks! I can definitely recommend them!

The Bosch IXO is more than sufficient for KALLAX. Just set the torque to low and you’re good to go.

Do you perhaps have any recommendations for brands or models that work well for this kind of furniture?

Makita or Bosch, depending on your budget. The IXO is compact, making it ideal for cabinets and shelves like KALLAX.

A small additional tip: When tightening, you should never do it all at once. Instead, check multiple times and tighten gradually and carefully.

The screws in KALLAX shelves are often set in laminated wood that can slightly adjust under pressure. This way, you avoid over-tightening and causing damage.

Otherwise, good luck with the tightening! If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help.

This really helps a lot. I've been doing it that way for a few years now and have never had any problems. 🙂

One more tip for everyone reading here: If a shelf is older and the screws are becoming loose, sometimes it helps to remove the screws, fill the hole with some wood glue, and then reinsert the screws. This can improve the stability.

Of course, only if you use the right tools to tighten them properly; otherwise, it won’t help. Hope this is useful to some of you.
