keemilia3918 Oct 2024 09:13Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Kallax shelf from IKEA and despite careful assembly, it wobbles slightly when gently tapped or lightly loaded. I have checked all screws multiple times, the individual parts are positioned exactly as they should be, and I have followed the assembly instructions meticulously. However, there is still some noticeable instability, especially when the shelf is empty or only lightly filled.
I would like to understand: Why does the Kallax shelf wobble slightly despite careful assembly? Is it due to the design, the material, or typical Kallax construction methods? Are there any tips or specific measures to significantly improve its stability? I appreciate any objective advice.

this is a common issue with Kallax. The shelf is basically designed as a lightweight, modular piece of furniture that appears stable on level surfaces under normal loads. However, the material is particle board or MDF with a laminate finish, which unfortunately does not offer the same stability as solid wood. Additionally, the joints are often only slot-fitted and screwed, lacking continuous bracing that would completely prevent wobbling.
The wobbling is also often caused by minor unevenness in the floor. A few small shims or felt pads under the feet usually help a lot.
Another option is to secure the shelf to the wall using brackets. Many users consider this a standard practice.
Best regards!

Why does the Kallax shelf wobble slightly despite careful assembly? From a technical standpoint, this is a typical characteristic issue related to the construction method and materials used in Kallax shelves. The main reasons for the wobbling are:
1. The relatively thin panels (usually 15 mm (0.6 inches) MDF or particleboard) without load-bearing internal supports.
2. The half-lap joints and metal connector screws, which flex slightly under load.
3. The often missing wall attachment for additional stabilization.
Note: Reinforcing with extra cross braces or an additional base pad can help. Alternatively, securing the unit to the wall is the most reliable solution from a technical perspective.
I would like to add that even with careful assembly, a minimal amount of play remains at the connection points due to manufacturing tolerances in IKEA furniture. These tolerances accumulate across multiple components, which ultimately explains the slight wobbling.
The even distribution of weight on the shelves also affects stability. Uneven or one-sided loading can increase wobbling. Additionally, when placed on soft floor coverings such as carpets or uneven tiles, the feet should be properly adjusted to compensate.
