ᐅ After purchasing, the screws for the KALLAX were too short – should I file a complaint?

Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and noticed during assembly that the screws provided for the back panel and to secure certain components are far too short. This makes it difficult to properly stabilize the unit, which is quite frustrating since I made sure all parts were included.
My question is: Is it worth trying to return or exchange these screws at IKEA? Has anyone had similar experiences and can comment on how accommodating their customer service is? Or are there recommended alternatives and tips for choosing suitable screws?
Looking forward to your opinions and advice.

I find it really annoying when this happens right after buying something new. Last time, IKEA sent me replacement parts very easily and without any hassle.
What also helped me was looking for replacements at the hardware store since screws are often standardized, and sometimes using longer or stronger screws made the shelf more stable.
I would still file a complaint but at the same time try to see if you can find a solution yourself.

Regarding screws and shelf stability, I would like to point out a few important facts:
1. KALLAX units are usually assembled with various connectors, where the screws are precisely sized to avoid damaging the material.
2. Screws that are too short cannot properly distribute the load and may loosen under stress.
3. Replacement screws should match in length, diameter, thread type, and coating.
My suggestion:
- As a first step, always send a complaint to IKEA, preferably in writing with a photo of the issue (if possible, also include the packaging contents with the list of screws).
- At the same time, look for screws of the same type at a hardware store, for example, metric screws in lengths from 20 millimeters to 30 millimeters (0.8 inches to 1.2 inches) to keep in stock.
You can also use screws of the same length with a thicker head to gain more stability. However, be careful and check beforehand if the material allows for this.

I would like to go into more detail on this topic, as the importance of screw length for furniture is often underestimated.
KALLAX shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating. The material is not very thick and requires screws with precisely matched lengths to avoid splitting the particleboard or making the furniture unstable.
The supplied screws are often clearly assigned to wall mounting, the back panel, or the connection of elements. If a screw is too short, there can be two reasons:
- Production error (wrong screws packed)
- Mixing up screws during packaging
It is worth contacting IKEA to make a claim, as they usually offer replacement parts—even if it seems like a minor issue. I recommend:
1. Writing down which screws are missing or do not fit (measure length and diameter)
2. Contacting IKEA customer service or using their online support
3. Requesting replacements
If the claim does not lead to a solution, screws can be purchased at a hardware store. When doing so, keep in mind:
- Metric thread according to specifications
- Length and diameter appropriate for the furniture without damaging the material
If you like, you can post the exact screw details here, and I can give you more specific recommendations.

Thank you for the responses so far. I will try to answer your questions:
I assembled the shelf according to the instructions, and no parts are missing. I measured the screws, and they are approximately 5–7 mm (0.2–0.3 inches) shorter than specified in the assembly manual for securing the back panel.
This is likely the issue, as the back panel is not properly secured, causing the shelf to be a bit unstable.
I will contact Ikea tomorrow and initiate a complaint.
@Laukau5
Thanks for the offer. I will take a closer look at the screws and get back to you if needed. What I am still unsure about: Do you think IKEA will send replacement screws individually, or will I have to return the entire product?

What I don’t know yet: Do you think IKEA will send me replacement screws individually, or do I have to return the entire product? In my experience, IKEA has always sent replacement parts individually. They even offer special screw kits or small components that you can simply reorder.
I don’t think you need to return the whole shelving unit. The important thing is to contact customer service well and clearly describe the issue.

I would also file a complaint, but at the same time, check whether the screws might accidentally belong to a different model, as the same shelving unit often comes in versions with different parts.
