Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and noticed during assembly that the screws provided for the back panel and to secure certain components are far too short. This makes it difficult to properly stabilize the unit, which is quite frustrating since I made sure all parts were included.

My question is: Is it worth trying to return or exchange these screws at IKEA? Has anyone had similar experiences and can comment on how accommodating their customer service is? Or are there recommended alternatives and tips for choosing suitable screws?

Looking forward to your opinions and advice.

A brief addition regarding possible solutions:

When you start the claim process and wait for a replacement, you can temporarily use screws from a hardware store that may be slightly longer, but only if the screws do not damage the rear support beam.

To find the right screws, pay attention to:
- Metric thread (usually M4 or M5 for KALLAX)
- Screw length preferably a bit longer rather than too short
- Head type (flat head or countersunk) suitable for the mounting surface

With this information, purchasing replacement screws is often straightforward.

I’m sharing a quick experience: IKEA usually responds quickly when you request spare parts by email or through their website. Whether it’s screws or small fittings, they usually send them without any issues.

If you call, just stay polite—they are often accommodating. Good luck with your claim!

Summary:

- KALLAX screws must be the correct length according to the instructions, as this determines the stability.
- Your measured difference of 5-7 mm (0.2-0.3 inches) is significant and justifies a complaint.
- Replacement screws are usually sent individually by IKEA if you clearly state the defect.

Tip: When contacting IKEA, describe the exact issue and mention the stability problem of the shelving unit, see
