Hello everyone, I’m considering using my IKEA Kallax shelf as a wardrobe, especially in the hallway area, and I’d like to hear about your experiences with this. I’m thinking of either leaving the compartments open or combining them with inserts and hooks to organize coats, jackets, scarves, and shoes efficiently. However, I’m wondering how you have handled the stability and the attachment of wardrobe hooks to the Kallax—since it needs to be sturdy, particularly when holding children’s jackets or heavy coats. I’m also interested in whether you prefer using the Kallax standing upright or lying down as a wardrobe, and how practical it is in everyday use. How do you do it, and what tips can you share?

Hey, it’s great that you want to use the Kallax as a coat rack! 🙂 I did it by leaving some compartments completely open and screwing hooks onto the side panel next to them. It’s important to screw the hooks firmly into the side panels; otherwise, they won’t hold well. My jackets hang very securely, and I even use baskets in the compartments for hats and gloves. Positioning it vertically works better because it makes it easier to access your items. Good luck!

Regarding stability: The Kallax is generally designed for moderate loads; the side panels are reinforced and should hold hooks well when these are attached with appropriate wall plugs or screws. I recommend, if necessary, drilling holes yourself and distributing the hooks evenly across the entire width of the side panel to minimize the load. For placement in the hallway, a standing shelving unit is advantageous, as taking out and putting in clothes is more convenient. For shoes, closed inserts or boxes are suitable to contain dirt.

It’s interesting that many people simply repurpose the Kallax as a shelving unit. But what about the long-term load on the sides? Kallax is not primarily designed to support hanging loads. Are there any specific indications of how long the stability will last if very heavy coats or backpacks are hung? I’m asking because the side panels might eventually warp or stretch. Does anyone have long-term experience with this?

This is exactly one issue that concerns me as well. Unfortunately, IKEA does not provide official information on how much load the side panels can support for hook fittings. I am therefore interested in how you approach reinforcement—have you added extra battens or additional screws, for example? I would appreciate any ideas on how to make the shelf sturdy enough.

If you want more stability, attach wooden battens or metal brackets inside the sides. This prevents sagging. Alternatively, you can secure the shelf to the wall to support additional load.
