Hello everyone, I’m considering using my IKEA Kallax shelf as a wardrobe, especially in the hallway area, and I’d like to hear about your experiences with this. I’m thinking of either leaving the compartments open or combining them with inserts and hooks to organize coats, jackets, scarves, and shoes efficiently. However, I’m wondering how you have handled the stability and the attachment of wardrobe hooks to the Kallax—since it needs to be sturdy, particularly when holding children’s jackets or heavy coats. I’m also interested in whether you prefer using the Kallax standing upright or lying down as a wardrobe, and how practical it is in everyday use. How do you do it, and what tips can you share?
In summary, when converting a Kallax shelf unit into a wardrobe, the following should be considered: increase the load capacity of the side panels by reinforcing them, ensure secure attachment of the hooks using pre-drilled holes, and anchor the unit to the wall. Organizing the space is easier with suitable boxes or inserts. For different jacket lengths, a combination of side panels with inner hooks and an additional coat rail above the unit is recommended.

I find the combination of storage and coat rack practical. Does anyone have experience with an integrated seating area in connection with the Kallax used as a coat rack? Could a Kallax shelf also serve as a bench, or would that be too much load?

Relying on the Kallax alone is not sufficient. An extra mounting board on top helps distribute the weight more evenly and provides greater stability. Otherwise, there is a risk that the shelf may sag or become damaged.

An additional mounting plate on top distributes the load more evenly and provides greater stability. That's exactly what I did as well! I screwed a wide OSB board onto the shelf and added a thick cushion. This way, I have a very practical bench with storage, and it looks great 🙂
