Hello everyone,

A few months ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, and recently I have noticed fine cracks on the surface. These cracks are mainly on the panels, so they do not go all the way through to the core material; they are rather superficial.

My question is whether this is normal for a KALLAX, meaning if the material is known to develop such fine cracks over time. I have used the shelving unit exactly as recommended and have not overloaded it. Temperature and humidity were also constant, with no unusual conditions.

Has anyone experienced something similar, or could this possibly indicate a manufacturing defect? I would be very grateful for any advice on prevention or repair!

Hello Mefrank,

fine cracks in the surface of KALLAX shelves are not uncommon, especially when using coated particleboard, which IKEA uses for these shelves. These boards are quite durable but can sometimes develop fine surface cracks due to fluctuations in humidity or mechanical stress.

Since you maintain stable environmental conditions and have not overloaded the shelf, I would suspect either a minor production variation in the material or residual micro-stresses that only became apparent after assembly.

Repairs can be done using fine plastic or wood filler, after which you can protect the surface with special furniture wax or clear lacquer.

From a technical perspective, these cracks are not a structural issue but rather cosmetic, provided they were not caused by other mechanical damage.

Exactly, I can confirm that. Many users have reported that the surface sometimes develops fine hairline cracks due to temperature fluctuations and increased humidity. This is especially common in rooms with forced-air heating or poor ventilation.

What you can do: Avoid placing the shelf near radiators or windows with strong sunlight. This often helps extend the lifespan of the surface.

Additionally, you can treat the surface with furniture care products or surface oil to prevent further cracking.

Hey Mefrank,

I had the same issue with my KALLAX! It’s really frustrating when you’re looking forward to the Ikea piece and then those cracks appear. 🙁

But don’t worry! They are usually just superficial. For me, lightly rubbing the surface with wax helped – it somehow pulled the small cracks together and now it looks better.

KALLAX is otherwise a really great shelf, sturdy and practical! So don’t give up, there are solutions! 🙂

I can confirm that. Cracks in painted or melamine-coated surfaces are usually caused by slight tension in the material. Furniture wax both protects and maintains the surface, making it more resistant.

It is important to choose a product suitable for coated wood-based materials to avoid any residues or discoloration.

Let’s be honest – fine cracks on the surface of a piece of furniture that you buy quite cheaply at a store are clearly a matter of consumer perception and lack of appreciation in our throwaway society!

The question should rather be: Is the shelf worth it to you to take proper care of it, and that doesn’t happen by itself. These splits can happen sooner or later with any MDF or particleboard, whether it’s a KALLAX or a custom build.

The hype around IKEA furniture and its supposed “quality problems” sometimes annoys me. The piece does its job, and honestly, that’s all I want.
