ᐅ My KALLAX shelving unit quickly absorbs odors – is it possible to neutralize them?

Pasar31Hello everyone, I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and I noticed that it absorbs odors very quickly. This is especially problematic for me because I store clothes and sometimes slightly musty decorations there. My question is: does anyone have experience or tips on how to neutralize the odors without completely disassembling or repainting the shelf? I also prefer not to use strong chemicals since the shelf is in my living room. It seems like the wood-based material or the surface really holds onto the smells. Are there effective household remedies or special products you can recommend? I would appreciate any advice!

I had a similar issue with an old bookshelf – regular airing out and wiping it down with a cloth dampened with vinegar water helped me. Not too much liquid, just enough to moisten so the wood composite doesn’t swell. Maybe it’s worth a try?
By the way, I think it’s great that you’re already considering low-emission solutions. :-)

I’d recommend trying activated charcoal. It’s available as powder or in bags – it effectively absorbs odors. Place a few small bowls or bags on the shelves and leave them for a few days. It worked well for me without much effort or chemicals. Also, make sure to air everything out beforehand, ideally by opening windows to let fresh air in.
Good luck, you’ve got this! 😉
Pasar31, here is a possible step-by-step guide on how to tackle unwanted odors in a KALLAX shelf unit (or similar wood-based material):
1. First, thoroughly wipe the shelf with a microfiber cloth and some water to remove dust and surface dirt.
2. Use a vinegar solution (mixed about 1:1 with water), lightly dampen the cloth, and wipe all visible surfaces. Vinegar is a well-known home remedy for neutralizing odors.
3. Then, leave the shelf in a well-ventilated area or at least ensure the rooms are ventilated thoroughly.
4. Additionally, you can place activated charcoal bags or baking soda in the compartments. These absorb moisture and odors.
Important: Avoid using too much liquid, as the particleboard could swell.
If the shelf is still quite new, the factory coating might be less breathable, trapping odors inside. However, with patience, regular airing, and the treatment described, you should see improvement.
