Hello everyone, I’m considering using my IKEA Kallax shelf as a wardrobe, especially in the hallway area, and I’d like to hear about your experiences with this. I’m thinking of either leaving the compartments open or combining them with inserts and hooks to organize coats, jackets, scarves, and shoes efficiently. However, I’m wondering how you have handled the stability and the attachment of wardrobe hooks to the Kallax—since it needs to be sturdy, particularly when holding children’s jackets or heavy coats. I’m also interested in whether you prefer using the Kallax standing upright or lying down as a wardrobe, and how practical it is in everyday use. How do you do it, and what tips can you share?

Based on my experience, I recommend the following approach: To securely fasten the hooks, it is better to pre-drill holes to prevent the material from splitting. For heavy clothing, additional reinforcement of the side panel can be useful, for example, a strip made of multiplex plywood or MDF that is firmly attached to the frame with screws. During assembly, all connections should be tightened as much as possible to avoid any flexibility. It is also helpful to anchor the Kallax unit to the wall, especially if children are involved in helping.

100% agree! Safety comes first! If your house is full of kids, I would always secure the shelf. My solution with the open Kallax is also placed on sturdy supports, which provides extra stability and makes it easier to clean underneath.

It is also worth mentioning the customizability of the Kallax: there are suitable inserts with doors, drawers, or baskets available from IKEA or third-party suppliers that can be used to organize and adapt the wardrobe to personal needs. The choice of whether to keep compartments open or closed depends on storage requirements and aesthetic preference. For the hallway area, boxes are recommended to highlight loose clothing items like gloves and avoid leaving them lying around.

Modifiability of the Kallax

One thing I’m wondering about: how do you handle the height of the hooks? The original height of the Kallax can be a bit low for standing use when hanging coats. Have you made any modifications or chosen a different position for the hooks?

The question about hook height is also relevant for me because in our hallway the Kallax unit stands on the floor, and the top row would be too low for long coats. Do you think a combination of a standing shelf with a coat rack installed above it could be a suitable solution? Or would that look visually untidy?

I set up my Kallax unit standing upright and installed hooks in the middle of the sides, so shorter jackets hang well. For longer coats, I mounted a clothes rail above. This setup works well and looks very neat overall.
