I recently tried to find replacement parts for my older Kallax shelving unit and discovered that it’s not that easy. Especially the connector pieces between the individual components and the original fastening screws seem to be hardly available anymore. Has anyone else had similar experiences? What options are there for finding replacement parts that are truly compatible and meet the original quality standards? Specifically, I am looking for parts for a model from the early 2010s, if that helps.

For older KALLAX models, the best option is often to contact IKEA directly or keep an eye on the second-hand markets. Spare parts are rarely available new anymore.

The topic of replacement parts for older KALLAX models is actually a bit more complicated than one might initially think. The main challenge is that IKEA rarely offers spare parts separately once the furniture piece is older. Additionally, production runs have changed over time, and individual components like screws, connectors, or cover caps are not always compatible.

To find the right parts, there are different approaches: On one hand, specialized second-hand markets or platforms like eBay often sell complete shelves or individual components. On the other hand, it’s advisable to carefully research the serial numbers of your own shelf to specifically look for compatible parts.

I’m interested to know which parts are especially problematic? Are you mainly concerned with connecting elements, shelves, or fasteners?

Thank you for the initial tips! The connecting elements that hold together the individual cubes in a modified structure are the main issue. These are small plastic brackets and metal pins that I cannot simply replace with standard alternatives without risking a loss of stability. Screws and back panels, on the other hand, are easier to find.

If it helps anyone: my KALLAX has the model number 202.165. Tinder, manufactured around 2012. I have also tried contacting IKEA customer service but have not received a satisfactory response so far.

Interesting issue. To examine it precisely from a technical perspective: The connecting components in older KALLAX shelves like your model 202.165 are usually so-called cam lock fasteners combined with dowels. It turns out that IKEA has updated these fastening mechanisms several times over the past few years; as a result, many newer replacement parts do not fit older models without problems.

In most cases, I recommend the following steps:
1. Search for original parts using the model number mentioned above, possibly online on specialized platforms or second-hand markets.
2. If original parts are not available, check for high-quality universal furniture connectors with similar dimensions. However, make sure that the load distribution is comparable.
3. If you have the necessary skills, it can be worthwhile to create new brackets from durable plastic using 3D printing.

Have you taken a close look at the function of the connection and measured it carefully to evaluate possible alternatives?

That sounds technically very interesting and definitely feasible. Unfortunately, I don’t have direct access to 3D printers, but I imagine there are service providers who can handle this.

I am also curious if there are any guidelines on how to measure the original connection as precisely as possible to have the replacement parts made optimally. Specifically, which dimensions are crucial and what tolerances are reasonable without compromising the fit.
