Hello everyone,

I have a problem with the doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit—they keep falling off the hinges. The attachment doesn’t seem sturdy enough, especially when the doors are opened frequently or heavier items are stored behind them. My question is: what options are available to secure the KALLAX doors more reliably and permanently so they no longer fall off? Are there stronger hinges, alternative fixing methods, or proven tips you could recommend?

I’d rather not rebuild the entire unit, but a stable solution is important. Thanks for your ideas and experiences!

Hey Karim, sounds like a pragmatist!

I had the same issue with my KALLAX doors. My tip: take a close look at the hinges. Often, it’s those small plastic clips that come loose or break. I replaced them with more durable metal hinges—these are usually available from third-party suppliers and hold up much better.

You can also secure the screws with small washers to prevent them from loosening. And if you’re up for it, you could add small magnetic catches to keep the door firmly closed.

That’s what I did—now it’s rock solid, and the difference is hardly noticeable. 🙂

The main issue with KALLAX doors is often that the original hinges are not designed to withstand frequent use.

My recommendation is to replace the original IKEA hinges with more durable cabinet hinges available at hardware stores. Additionally, applying thread-locking adhesive on the screws can prevent them from loosening.

If the shelving unit is fixed to the wall, adding extra reinforcement with angle brackets on the sides helps, as the weight of the doors can otherwise strain the attachment. This is especially important if the doors are heavily loaded.

Tighten door hinges more often and use high-quality screws.

Alternatively, self-adhesive door magnetic catches can be installed for extra hold.

I would check the hinges and, if they are loosely installed, use new wall plugs and screws.

Metal hinges instead of plastic components are a simple and durable solution.

If we want to get technical: KALLAX usually comes with basic flap door hinges made of thin material and limited durability. The issue often lies in the material or the attachment to the frame.

I recommend the following approach:

1. Choose hinges: Replace the original ones with sturdy, industrial-grade cup hinges made of steel, ideally with larger screw and groove contact surfaces.

2. Fastening: Use strong screws with spring washers and possibly threadlocker (e.g., Loctite 243). For heavy doors, I would suggest metal anchors or even metal brackets at the shelf edge to better support the weight.

3. Adjust the door: Ensure optimal alignment using eccentric adjustment screws on the hinges – door detachment often results from improper adjustment.

4. Alternatively, you can add reinforcement with small brackets on the inside of the frame.

How exactly are your doors mounted? Are they simply hooked in or are the hinges fully screwed in? And what material is the frame made of: particleboard or MDF?

These details are very helpful for finding a solution.
