ᐅ After installing new doors, the back panel of the KALLAX unit is loose – any tips?

tau45Hello everyone,
I am currently facing an issue after installing new doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelf unit. Since the doors were mounted, the back panel of the KALLAX has become noticeably loose and no longer fits securely as before. My shelf unit is quite large (2x4 compartments), and I used the original back panel. It seems that the back panel warped slightly when the doors were installed or no longer fits properly in the tongue-and-groove profile, causing it to rattle and lose stability.
Has anyone experienced this issue? Are there any tips on how to resecure the back panel without damaging the doors or the shelf unit? I would prefer not to take everything apart completely.
I appreciate any advice or suggestions, as I would like to continue using the shelf as before. Thanks in advance!

The back panel seems to have warped slightly when the doors were installedThis is actually a common issue that can result from changes in tension and load distribution. Once you install the doors, the side or top edges of the frame might press slightly against the back panel, causing it to loosen or no longer sit flush.
My advice: first, remove the doors and check if the back panel fits correctly without them. Then, carefully inspect the back panel profiles (tongue and groove). Often, gently bending the back panel or pressing it further into the groove helps—but be careful not to crack it.
It’s also important to check whether the screws or fasteners for the doors might be slightly bending the shelf or causing tension. If so, you can use small spacers to reduce the stress on the back panel.
Could you please specify what type of doors you installed (folding doors, sliding doors, or simple hinged doors) and how they are mounted? This information could help narrow down the cause further.

The back panel seems to have warped slightly when installing the doorsThere is another common cause that is often overlooked: The material of the back panel in KALLAX units is usually thin and prone to twisting. Once the doors are installed, you can try securing the back panel further with small nails or thin screws, which will be barely visible on the surface.
Alternatively, you can make small strips from thin wood or plastic to attach behind the back panel with screws, providing additional stability. Make sure these strips do not press against the doors to maintain their smooth movement.
If the shelving unit is placed directly against the wall, it can also help to fix the back panel to the wall using adhesive tape or mounting tape to prevent it from shifting.
Sometimes I really wonder if IKEA intentionally designs the KALLAX to cause these kinds of problems, so that people end up buying accessories or dealing with customer service. It’s clear that a thin back panel on a larger shelving unit with doors has to withstand more load.
That’s exactly what I see too. The doors change the pressure on the back panel, and if it isn’t strong enough, it will become loose. The only solution is reinforcement or modification. Maybe it’s better to just use a sturdier back panel instead of the original one.

Maybe it would be better to use a stronger back panel than the original one.I have thought about that as well. The original back panel is actually quite thin – but so far the shelf has worked great. I think the main issue really comes from installing the doors, which slightly changes the structure of the KALLAX unit.

Could you maybe share what type of doors you installed?I installed simple sliding doors from the KALLAX accessories. They run on a track at the top. The sides are not screwed in, but slide freely within the opening.
I suspect the top track puts extra pressure on the back panel when moving the doors or when the shelf is stationary. Are there any additional tips on how to reinforce the back panel without limiting the sliding doors’ functionality?
