Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, but I only recently realized that I didn’t install an anti-tip device. Since I have small children in the house, I now want to add one to ensure safety.

My question is: What is the easiest and safest way to retrofit an anti-tip device on the KALLAX shelf? What materials or special fasteners are needed? Is it advisable to simply use universal anti-tip devices from a hardware store, or should I use specific IKEA parts?

I look forward to your experiences and tips on installation, as well as any advice on the best positioning of the safety device to make sure it works effectively. Thanks in advance!

This is the main question. When installing an anti-tip device after the fact, the most important factor is how stable the surface is where you plan to attach the device. Many universal anti-tip kits include screws and wall anchors that need to be fixed to the wall.

Whether you need original IKEA parts depends on the construction of the KALLAX. The standard IKEA safety fittings are designed for the material and dimensions of the shelf, but they are not necessarily better than good third-party devices that use metal brackets and quality screws.

Are you sure your wall can hold anchors properly? Drywall (plasterboard) can be more challenging. If it can, just make sure the screws hold firmly and the device is securely mounted.

You need screws, wall plugs, brackets, and a power drill. Connect the wall and shelf as described in the IKEA instructions. Important: Avoid cheap plastic; metal brackets are better.

Hello,

when retrofitting anti-tip brackets to KALLAX shelves, it is important to first check the condition of the wall. For solid walls such as concrete or brick, installation with suitable anchors and screws is straightforward. For drywall or softer walls, special cavity anchors may be necessary.

If you are not using the IKEA safety solution, standard anti-tip devices can also work as long as they are sturdy enough. I recommend attaching the bracket as high as possible on the inside of the shelf, as this is where the forces are best transferred to prevent tipping.

Make sure the screws are anchored deeply enough into the wall and that the shelf cannot shift. If unsure, adding a second bracket at the bottom can help stabilize the angle.

If you can provide more information about the wall, I can offer more precise advice.

I completely agree, especially with a shelf like KALLAX, which is relatively slim and has a high center of gravity. Anti-tip brackets are most effective when installed near the top.

One point I’d like to add: the strength of the connection to the wall is often underestimated. Universal plastic anti-tip devices mainly withstand small, sudden forces, but if children frequently pull on them, metal is better.

Has anyone worked with metal brackets that require additional drilling? That seems like a good compromise.

Metal brackets are better. Screw them in, and the shelf will be stable. Important: choose the right wall anchor / plug for the wall.
