Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, but I only recently realized that I didn’t install an anti-tip device. Since I have small children in the house, I now want to add one to ensure safety.

My question is: What is the easiest and safest way to retrofit an anti-tip device on the KALLAX shelf? What materials or special fasteners are needed? Is it advisable to simply use universal anti-tip devices from a hardware store, or should I use specific IKEA parts?

I look forward to your experiences and tips on installation, as well as any advice on the best positioning of the safety device to make sure it works effectively. Thanks in advance!

Alternative: Use an angle bracket from the hardware store and screw the board to the shelf and wall. Very stable and often cheaper than original parts.

From a technical perspective, the force redirection must occur close to the top edge of the shelving unit. Therefore, the anti-tip bracket should be installed on the inside near the top.

The manufacturer IKEA offers anti-tip brackets with screw mounting that are specifically designed for the KALLAX shelving unit. These should be preferred, as they use the correct drilling positions and mounting points.

For walls made of softer materials, it is recommended to use cavity anchors or special heavy-duty anchors to minimize the risk of failure due to tearing out.

It is important to remember: The shelving unit only constitutes a secure construction if the connection point is firmly anchored, screwed into the wall, and the bracket used is adequately sized.

I recently equipped the KALLAX with IKEA tilt locks. Simply tighten the screws, attach them inside at the top either by sticking or screwing – it holds very well. Nothing complicated.

What do you think about self-adhesive tilt locks for the KALLAX? Are they a viable option if you don’t want to drill but still need a safety device?

Without a secure screw fixing, I consider self-adhesive locks too unreliable. They might hold under light stress, but with children pulling on the shelf, there is a high risk that the adhesive bond will fail.

For safety, no compromises should be made – drilling is unfortunately necessary.

Maybe the installation can be done in a minimally invasive way, for example with small screws that can be removed later if needed.

I agree with the assessment that self-adhesive solutions are at best a temporary fix.

Real safety can only be ensured through a mechanical connection. Especially when it comes to child safety, drilling should not be avoided.

If you have housemates who are reluctant to drill, using corner brackets fixed in a discreet location can be a good compromise.
