Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my bathroom and wondering whether the IKEA Hemnes furniture series is actually suitable for wet rooms.

I understand that Hemnes is mainly made of solid pine wood and is white-stained, which looks very appealing. However, I am questioning to what extent the moisture resistance of this furniture is truly guaranteed, especially over a longer period of use. So far, I have heard different opinions: some say that the wood can easily warp in high humidity or that the surface gets damaged, while others claim that it is quite okay for bathrooms thanks to a special sealing.

For those of you who use Hemnes in bathrooms or similar damp environments, could you please share your experiences? How is the maintenance, durability, and are there any alternative treatment or protection methods you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for your detailed opinions and tips!

Regarding your question:

The IKEA Hemnes furniture is solidly made but positioned in the lower price range, which means it does not have the same protective coatings or finishes as high-quality solid wood furniture specifically designed for humid environments.

- Specialized manufacturers often use water-repellent lacquers or films that provide significantly better protection for the wood.
- IKEA primarily uses a thin white glaze on Hemnes pieces, which serves more as a visual finish than as a moisture barrier.

This means Hemnes furniture is more susceptible to moisture compared to more expensive alternatives designed to resist humidity over the long term. This is an important factor to consider when using it in a bathroom.

I completely agree. The construction of Hemnes is not designed to withstand moisture, even though it is solid wood. It is simply not ideal for permanent wet rooms.

One last question for everyone:

Are there any experiences with DIY treatments for IKEA Hemnes furniture, for example with special sealants or varnishes that can be applied additionally without significantly changing the appearance?

I want to stay as close as possible to the original look but make the furniture more durable. Are there any issues like peeling or color changes?

As long as you use clear or white-tinted wood varnishes, you can effectively seal the furniture.

However:
- Varnish layers are less breathable
- If not applied carefully, peeling can occur
- Always sand the furniture thoroughly before painting

For the best protection, acrylic varnishes with a matte finish are a good choice, as they alter the appearance very little.

And that is exactly the problem in bathrooms. Trapped moisture can then cause blistering and damage to the wood.

Thank you for the additional insights; they really help me with my decision. To summarize, I take away the following points:

- The IKEA Hemnes is visually appealing and made of solid pine, but it is not specifically designed for damp rooms.
- It can be used where there is good ventilation and no direct exposure to water.
- Regular maintenance with oil is beneficial, and coatings should be chosen carefully.
- More expensive solid wood furniture designed for damp environments offers better protection through special surface treatments.

I will likely choose a combination of good airflow, careful maintenance, and caution regarding placement. Thanks again to everyone who shared their experiences and tips!
