Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my bathroom and wondering whether the IKEA Hemnes furniture series is actually suitable for wet rooms.

I understand that Hemnes is mainly made of solid pine wood and is white-stained, which looks very appealing. However, I am questioning to what extent the moisture resistance of this furniture is truly guaranteed, especially over a longer period of use. So far, I have heard different opinions: some say that the wood can easily warp in high humidity or that the surface gets damaged, while others claim that it is quite okay for bathrooms thanks to a special sealing.

For those of you who use Hemnes in bathrooms or similar damp environments, could you please share your experiences? How is the maintenance, durability, and are there any alternative treatment or protection methods you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for your detailed opinions and tips!

I would say Hemnes is not ideal for wet rooms. The wood can swell, and the finish may peel off quickly. It’s better to choose a more water-resistant material.

I completely understand your concerns; I once had Hemnes furniture in the bathroom myself. At first, everything looked great, but after some time, the wood developed small bubbles and discoloration in certain areas. This is really frustrating, especially if you have high humidity in the room.

The Hemnes series is made from solid pine wood, which is generally not ideal for wet areas. The white stain provides some protection but does not offer long-lasting moisture resistance like a varnish or specialized treatments.

If you still want to use Hemnes in your bathroom area, I recommend:
- Avoid placing furniture directly next to water sources
- Regular surface maintenance with appropriate wood oils or waxes
- For very humid rooms, it is better to ensure improved ventilation (e.g., an extractor fan)

In short: It is doable with caution, but without reservations, I would not recommend Hemnes for wet rooms.

Wood in bathrooms does not work well long-term without special protection. Hemnes does not have a specific moisture sealant. Therefore, I would only use it in well-ventilated areas.

Thank you for the quick responses!

[@nubar, post: o9u2t3] “If you still want to use Hemnes for your bathroom area, I recommend regular surface maintenance with suitable wood oils or waxes.”

Could you please be more specific about that?
Which products are appropriate to protect the wood from moisture without compromising its appearance? And how often should this treatment ideally be applied to extend the lifespan?

I’m also open to advice on how to repair minor damage.
