Hello everyone, I have a somewhat tricky question regarding the Hemnes series from IKEA: What is the best way to deal with peeling veneers on Hemnes furniture?
Specifically, I’m dealing with the light-colored veneers on the fronts of the drawers, which are slowly peeling off at the edges. Not only does it look unattractive, but so far I haven’t been able to fix it permanently. I’m aware of the usual steps, like thoroughly cleaning before repair or pressing down with rollers, but the veneers still don’t hold long-term.
Maybe someone here has solid experience or tips on how to securely reattach the veneer or even prevent it from peeling in the first place? Possibly special adhesives or techniques that are not commonly considered? I’m looking forward to your advice and suggestions that go beyond just “clean and re-glue,” since I’ve already tried that several times without success.

If the original coated surfaces are defective, you might want to contact IKEA customer service, as there may be a warranty in some cases.Great tip! I was lucky back then and even received a replacement front from IKEA because the laminate started peeling after a short time. If your furniture is still relatively new, definitely give this a try!
But for older furniture, in my opinion, repair is the way to go. With the right adhesive and a bit of patience, it turns out great!
For the permanent repair of peeling laminate on IKEA Hemnes furniture, please follow these guidelines:
- Use only adhesives that are proven to be suitable for laminates and flexible PVC surfaces.
- Avoid any cleaning agents that leave residues or plasticizers before gluing.
- Ensure an ambient temperature of approximately 20-25°C (68-77°F) during the bonding process.
- Apply mechanical pressure for at least 24 hours.
A durable bond can only be achieved technically by following this procedure. Cheap all-purpose glues or unprepared surfaces usually result in failure.

I can agree with Fitigu and would like to add the following:
- Allow the adhesive to dry for the proper time as specified by the manufacturer.
- Avoid moisture or heat on the renewed adhesive joint.
- Do not apply any load to the edge within the first 24 hours.
Unfortunately, the quality of the membranes is often not very durable, so precise work is essential.

A structured summary on the topic of film peeling in IKEA HEMNES furniture:
1. Causes of failure:
- Moisture exposure on joints or edges
- Inappropriate cleaning before repair
- Use of incorrect adhesives
2. Preparation:
- Mechanical removal of old adhesive residues
- Cleaning with isopropanol
- Abrading the bonding surface if necessary
3. Adhesive selection:
- Contact adhesive for PVC or PVC-like films
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application
4. Application:
- Apply adhesive to both bonding surfaces
- Observe drying time
- Apply even pressure for at least 24 hours
5. Aftercare:
- Protect from moisture and load during the first few days
Important note: For heavily damaged films, replacing the covering film or the entire front is often the best long-term solution, as even good repairs with non-professional products tend to have limited durability.

If the issue concerns defective original coated surfaces, consider contacting IKEA customer service, as there may be a warranty in some cases.Thank you for the very well-structured post! It confirms some of my assumptions.
I will also contact IKEA and simultaneously try your step-by-step instructions. I don’t recall having tested the idea of roughening the film edge before.
Additionally, I will try the tip with the hairdryer and applying even pressure. Thanks to everyone for the thorough support — very helpful!
