Hello everyone!

Is a TAE socket still necessary nowadays? We won’t be getting a landline phone. Who even calls on those anymore?!

Is the socket needed for anything else?

A tip about the telecom provider: for our new build, they initially wanted to install a copper line. Last week we received a call and a letter (new order number) informing us that the connection method for our house had changed and we would now be getting fiber optic! If you’re unsure which type of cable will be installed, it’s best to ask in advance.

We just had a copper cable installed in our house. I’m building a new house in the German capital and they’re installing copper. That says everything you need to know about digitization in this country.

Before this, I lived in a less developed country—and there, fiber optic came straight out of the wall. 500 Mbit? No problem.

In the city where Angela Neuland has her office, it’s obviously a given *LOL*

Yes, in Germany’s second largest city, this apparently isn’t uncommon either… we don’t have fiber optic either!

Of course, fiber optic would be great, but I don’t find it that unusual that copper cables are still being installed. It all depends on the existing infrastructure. If the surrounding area only has an old copper network, new buildings will simply be connected to that. If I remember correctly, since 2016, Deutsche Telekom has been rolling out fiber optic in new development areas. Everything wired before that usually got copper. So if you build a new house in an area originally planned with copper, they still install copper there today.

It gets even worse. We’re building in the telecom hub and in one of the top neighborhoods. The telecom company says they can’t guarantee speeds; in the worst case, it’ll be 16 Mbps. Fiber optic would have cost us €20,000. Cable the same. So we’re taking a gamble. The street around us has 250 Mbps, but a neighboring lot behind us, similar to ours, only has 50 Mbps...
We’ll see how it goes.

I am moving from a small city to a remote village (because land in the city is becoming too expensive), and in our rental house in the small town, we already have fiber optic coming out of the wall. In the village, the fiber is already installed in the freshly plastered utility room, waiting for us eagerly.
I did not arrange this with the telecom provider; the fiber was installed by another company.
