Hello everyone!

Is a TAE socket still necessary nowadays? We won’t be getting a landline phone. Who even calls on those anymore?!

Is the socket needed for anything else?

A TAE socket is still needed today as the termination point for the "last mile," as long as it enters the house via copper wiring. With fiber optic installations, it becomes obsolete. Future fixed-line connections will no longer be tied to cables but rather linked to accounts that connect through the internet line into the house: in internet telephony, a virtual channel occupies a session, whereas in TDM telephone networks, a physical line was "occupied." This means a telephony service provider no longer requires a dedicated "line" but simply uses an existing, assumed network access. This is also terminated in fiber optic installations, of course, but no longer via a TAE socket.

I still find it fascinating how @11ant consistently derives and elaborates even the simplest and most subtle questions in such a "scientific" manner—sometimes also with a touch of social criticism. Always very entertaining.

So unnecessary and can be better replaced with a network socket! Thanks to you all!

May I ask if that was done for you at no extra cost? According to my scope of work, we also get a “telephone connection” for almost every living room (probably a TAE socket). I don’t really see much point in that either and would prefer to have a network socket instead.

We recently made some changes. Our base unit included 2 LAN outlets and 1 TAE socket in the scope of work.
We were refunded €60 for the removal of the TAE socket. One basic LAN outlet added bread with ham separately cost us €89.
Prices are net.

In our scope of work, there are of course no network outlets included, only telephone and TV. The idea now would be to install network outlets instead of telephone and TV outlets. Let’s see how this affects the price...

Possibly even as a "junction box" *ROTFL* *SCNR*
