Hello IKEA fans,

Despite researching here in the forum, across the web, and through many IKEA PDFs, I still don’t really know at what height I need to install the Metod hanging rail so that the wall cabinets in my kitchen hang exactly with their top edge at 245 cm (8 feet).

However, I now know in great detail how to fasten this rail alone or with help and how to hang the cabinets on it. But I could only determine the correct height for base cabinets, as this is specified in the IKEA documents. Their example then recommends 60 cm (24 inches) of space between base cabinets and wall cabinets, and gives a vague mention of another 60 cm (24 inches) to the upper hanging rail. To me, this is not clear.

I need to solve the following two issues by tomorrow morning so that the carpenter can complete the final assembly:

1. At what height should I install the hanging rail so that the 100 cm (39 inches) high wall cabinets hang with their top edge at 245 cm (8 feet), thus resting on the backsplash?

2. Is about 5 cm (2 inches) of space below the ceiling enough to hang the wall cabinets? Is it possible to slide or line them onto the rail in such a tight space?

I would be very grateful for quick advice.

Hello ruffy85,
The assembly instructions list the dimensions for the 220 cabinet as a rail height of 2.22 m (7 ft 3 in). For the 240 cabinet height, the bottom edge of the rail is at 2.42 m (7 ft 11 in). The rail itself is 6 cm (2.4 inches) high, which results in a total height of 2.48 m (8 ft 2 in). With an 8 cm (3.1 inches) baseboard and a 240 cm (7 ft 10 in) cabinet body, the total is 2.48 m (8 ft 2 in). I had the same setup in my kitchen, which is only 2.50 m (8 ft 2 in) high, and it worked without any issues.
To achieve a top edge height of 2.45 m (8 ft 1 in) for your wall cabinets, you need to subtract 6 cm (2.4 inches) from this dimension.
The bottom edge of the rail for your wall cabinets would then be 2.39 m (7 ft 10 in).

The additional 5 cm (2 inches) upwards is more than enough; you only need about 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6 to 0.8 inches).
Best regards, robi

Thank you for your quick response, Robi.

With the help of your text, I now fully understand this IKEA PDF. Until now, I was wondering what they meant by the cabinet heights in centimeters and the distances to a rail in millimeters, sometimes including the plinth height and sometimes without explicitly mentioning it.

As you explained, it’s quite simple. The top edge of the cabinet minus six centimeters (2.4 inches) is the bottom edge of the hanging rail, or in other words, the top edge of the hanging rail aligns with the top edge of the cabinets. I couldn’t find an explanation like this anywhere in the IKEA documents.
