Hello everyone,
Before buying my kitchen from IKEA, I was able to look at several older IKEA kitchens within my circle of friends.
I actually liked everything except for the pull-out Utrusta cabinet system. It did not close properly.
While looking for the cause of the problem, I came across this forum.
In the thread https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/utrusta-scharnier-im-metod-Schrank.19557/, I read that this issue is known and, as Bandito mentioned, a new improved version was supposed to come out in May.
I then purchased the new version with article number 902.974.50.
However, it is much worse than the ones I had seen before. You need to press even harder to close it. The pressure is so strong that if you only press on the handles, the front warps and the bottom still remains open. A diagonal brace might have been helpful.
This means the cabinet can only be closed if you also press the bottom with your foot.
The IKEA hotline could not identify this problem and recommended exchanging the cabinet system.
Before doing that, I want to ask here if maybe I just got a faulty hinge, installed it incorrectly, or if it’s better to return it altogether.
What have your experiences been? Does anyone have the pull-out cabinet system (article number 902.974.50) and does it close properly?
Thank you in advance for your replies.

IKEA-Experte26 Nov 2015 17:14Hello, I would return the item, try it out at the showroom, and only buy a new one if it works better there. There are also other suppliers for this, some even with self-retracting mechanisms.
Thank you for the tip. However, the narrowest cabinet in your link was 40 cm (16 inches), and I couldn’t find anything suitable for a 20 cm (8 inches) base cabinet through Google either. A soft-close mechanism would have been nice.
I took a closer look at the hinge. At the back, on the rear panel, there is a rubber piece slipped over the bracket that limits the insertion. The frame’s strip is pushed over this and is supposed to hold it in the end position. It seems that this rubber piece is slightly too thick.
I have now simply removed this rubber from the lower hinge, and it closes at the bottom without pressure. I will observe this for a while; maybe the rubber will become more flexible. Otherwise, I will use a cutter to shave off a layer to reduce the necessary pressure. I still have the lower hinge as a spare in case this doesn’t work out.

IKEA-Experte27 Nov 2015 11:53I misunderstood and thought the thing would be difficult to move at least in the last 10cm (4 inches). The rubber piece is meant to prevent the extension from opening by itself again. Over time, it will probably become a bit easier to move, but the part at the bottom really doesn’t make much sense.
The linked extension is available in widths of 15cm (6 inches), 20cm (8 inches), 30cm (12 inches), and 40cm (16 inches), depending on the chosen shelf width.

IKEA-Experte28 Nov 2015 21:55However, the drawers do have one drawback, as far as can be seen. The front must be attached very precisely. There is no possibility for adjustment afterward. Additionally, installation is very tight in the 20 cm (8 inches) cabinet, and it is highly unlikely that the holes in the carcass can be used for mounting.
