Hello everyone, I recently bought the IKEA Malm nightstand and I'm wondering how to best prevent stains on the surface. Since the top is either lacquered or covered with a film, I’m unsure which materials should be avoided and whether any special protective measures can be used to prevent stains from drinks, cosmetics, or other everyday items. Are there any tried-and-tested tips, tricks, or products you would recommend to keep the nightstand clean and stain-free for as long as possible? Thanks in advance for your experiences!

Make-up and nail polish are harmful to paint and films. Wipe off quickly or cover them, otherwise it’s not worth it.

For those who often have drinks like coffee or tea on the bedside table: coasters are essential. Especially when sugar is involved, otherwise there will be unpleasant stains.

Good additions, thanks! So it will probably come down to using a protective film combined with coasters and quick cleaning. Does anyone have experience with how to remove water stain marks from film or lacquered surfaces? Occasionally, I notice some faint marks like that, even when I wipe quickly.

Has anyone had experience removing water stains from plastic sheeting or painted surfaces?

Water stains can usually be removed with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. If that is not enough, a mixture of water and a drop of vinegar may help. Avoid using abrasive cleaners at all costs, as they can damage the surface.

For stubborn stains, a plastic or furniture polish can help. Use it sparingly and test it on an inconspicuous area first.

It should also be considered that the surface of Malm is not highly durable under heavy use. Gentle handling and regular maintenance are the best ways to protect against stains.
