Hello everyone, I recently bought the IKEA Malm nightstand and I'm wondering how to best prevent stains on the surface. Since the top is either lacquered or covered with a film, I’m unsure which materials should be avoided and whether any special protective measures can be used to prevent stains from drinks, cosmetics, or other everyday items. Are there any tried-and-tested tips, tricks, or products you would recommend to keep the nightstand clean and stain-free for as long as possible? Thanks in advance for your experiences!

Avoid using harsh cleaners and abrasive sponges. Immediately clean up spills with lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth.

Avoid direct heat such as hot cups. Always use heat protection and coasters. This helps prevent stains and burns.

Thank you for the helpful tips! @Alina67, could you possibly share a source for these vinyl protective films? I’m looking for something that feels as invisible as possible and isn’t too thick. How durable are these films against makeup or water stains?

Here, I recommend transparent self-adhesive furniture protection films, which are available online or at hardware stores. These are thin, clear, and water-resistant. They hold up well against water and cosmetics but should be replaced after 1-2 years depending on use. Important: Clean the surface dust-free before application to avoid bubbles.

I would also add that you should be careful when removing stains – always wipe gently, never scrub hard. Sometimes scratches occur from applying too much pressure.

Be careful with makeup! 🙂 Some creams can really leave stains quickly. It's better to test beforehand whether the residues can be easily wiped off.
