Hello everyone, I am currently planning to get a large PAX wardrobe from IKEA for my bedroom. Since I want to avoid any surprises regarding the size, I have the following question: How much space does a large PAX wardrobe actually require in the room, considering the width, height, and depth, including ventilation and possible modifications? I especially want to know how much clearance should be planned for opening the doors or drawers, whether additional space is needed at the back because of the depth, and how all of this changes depending on the wardrobe’s height and width. My room measures about 3.5 x 4 meters (11.5 x 13 feet), and I am planning a wardrobe with at least 2.5 meters (8 feet) in width and 2 meters (6.5 feet) in height. It would be helpful if someone could also include the minimum clearances necessary for optimal use. Thank you in advance!
Thank you for your feedback!
That sounds quite specific already. I’m currently considering whether sliding doors might be a better option since the rooms are rather small, although I want to stay somewhat flexible with the interior fittings. There are hinge systems available that work well even in rooms with limited clearance.
How much clearance did you have exactly? And did you plan for a depth of 60cm (24 inches) or more? Maybe based on your experience I could better estimate how to plan at the moment.

You should leave at least 60cm (24 inches) of clearance in front of the closet doors to allow them to open comfortably—especially if they have handles.

I initially had very little clearance in front, and it was quite tight when walking by.

Sliding doors definitely save space, but as mentioned before, the closet needs to be perfectly aligned and installed, otherwise they tend to get stuck easily. Also, the interior layout can sometimes be limited because you can’t open the closet fully to reach items at the very back.

And did you plan for a depth of 60 cm or more?I had exactly 60 cm (24 inches) depth and about 50 cm (20 inches) clearance in front – that was actually quite tight, especially when reaching in or opening drawers. I would always recommend 60 cm (24 inches) clearance in front; that feels comfortable.
For the Pax wardrobe and its largest dimensions, the following applies:
- Depth: 60 cm (24 inches) (standard)
- Width: varies by model, starting at 100 cm (39 inches) per wardrobe module
- Doors opening: keep at least 60 cm (24 inches) free in front of the wardrobe
- For sliding doors, allow extra space to the side due to the running tracks
- Back panel: 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches) space for ventilation
It is always recommended to have a bit more space in front of the unit for furniture of this size.

I agree with the previous comments. For large PAX wardrobes, the following applies:
- Depth 60 cm (25 inches) plus 2 cm (1 inch) clearance from the wall,
- 60 cm (25 inches) free space to open the doors,
- For sliding doors, no frontal opening space is required, but the side wall should be clear.
When in doubt, it’s better to allow a few extra centimeters, as this prevents space issues later on.
