Hello everyone, I am currently tasked with putting together the largest possible IKEA Platsa shelving unit for a long hallway. My question is: What is the maximum size an IKEA Platsa shelving unit can reach?

Specifically, I want to know the maximum height, width, and depth achievable by combining multiple individual modules without facing stability issues or installation restrictions.

I understand that Platsa is a modular system, but how many modules can reasonably be stacked or placed side by side? Are there official specifications or practical experiences that could help me with the planning?

I look forward to your assessments and tips, especially from anyone who has already built a very large Platsa shelving unit.

Hi, I have been using Platsa for various storage solutions for years and can say that I have even built combinations over 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall – but always with wall mounting and multiple safety brackets.

A small tip: For very wide units, you can add sturdy intermediate shelves or reinforcement strips; otherwise, the structure may become unstable over time under load.

And yes, you should pay attention to the maximum depth. Do not exceed 40 cm (16 inches), or the doors and drawers will no longer fit perfectly.

For longer shelves, it is also worth planning in sections that can be securely connected.

I’m adding a brief guide:

1. Height check: Maximum 190 cm (75 inches) per vertically stacked unit (according to the assembly instructions). Any increase beyond this requires wall mounting.

2. Width: No official limit, but from about 160 cm (63 inches) onwards, an additional crossbar should be installed for stabilization.

3. Depth: Fixed at 38–40 cm (15–16 inches) for Platsa; no extension possible without replacement.

4. Wall mounting: Always use, especially for taller or wider combinations.

5. Load: Pay attention to the maximum load per shelf according to the instructions, usually around 13–15 kg (29–33 lbs) per shelf.

Following these points should help you achieve an optimal and safe setup for your shelving unit.

Hello disau,

to address your original question more specifically: the maximum size of an IKEA Platsa shelving unit depends less on the dimensions of individual modules and more on your conditions and the installation:

- In height, I recommend no more than three modules without wall mounting.
- For four or more, you should definitely use the IKEA wall mounting brackets.
- You can increase the width almost as much as you like, but pay attention to load capacity and reinforcements.

If you like, I can also put together a small example of how to safely build such a large combination.

I completely agree. Additionally, I want to emphasize that the shelf material (particleboard) may show signs of fatigue more quickly in unusually tall or wide constructions.

This is an important point: oversized shelves should be regularly inspected depending on the load to detect any deformations early.

My conclusion: size yes, but better safe than impressively large.
