Hello everyone,

I am currently considering expanding my Ikea Platsa shelving units and wanted to ask: Is it possible to easily extend Ikea Platsa shelves?

Specifically, I mean whether the existing modules can be connected without difficulty, for example, to turn a single row of shelves into a longer one without compromising stability or appearance.

I plan to install the system against a wall and would like to know if Ikea offers any official options for this or if it mainly relies on DIY solutions. It would also be important to get advice on possible connectors, load capacity after extension, and whether reinforcements are needed when extending the units.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

Yes, the Platsa shelves can be expanded. Ikea offers various corner and connector elements. Simply place the modules side by side and secure them using the included connectors. Stability is ensured with normal use.

The Platsa series is modular and designed to allow flexible expansion of shelves. There are official connection brackets from Ikea that can be used to join the individual modules together. These provide sufficient stability.

It is important to always secure the modules to the wall to prevent tipping and to safely distribute the load.

Extensions are easily possible as long as the maximum load capacity of each element is not exceeded; these specifications can be found in the product descriptions.

I have expanded a Platsa system myself. It is important to use the original connecting parts and ensure that all modules are secured to the wall. Without wall fastening, the structure can become unstable, especially as the shelving gets longer.

Regarding load limits: individual modules easily support 20-30 kg (44-66 lbs) of shelf load, and the extension naturally multiplies this as long as all elements are properly fastened.

I understand why you’re wondering if the extension is straightforward – feeling confident that a piece of furniture is stable is important. Based on my experience with Platsa: the parts connect well, but especially when extending, you should definitely check the wall attachments and even reinforce them, depending on the total length of the unit.

I had a case where a longer shelving wall showed a slight sag in the middle – an extra wall bracket or some sturdier connectors solved the issue.

So be careful if you’re really going to make the shelf longer!

Thanks in advance for the initial insights.

Regarding the fasteners: Are these included as standard with the Platsa sets, or do they need to be purchased separately? I ask because with some modular furniture, only a few connectors are included, and additional sets are needed for extensions—especially when combining multiple modules.

One more question: Is the load capacity of an extension the same as that of a single module, or does the stability decrease due to the connection?
