Hello everyone, I am currently tasked with putting together the largest possible IKEA Platsa shelving unit for a long hallway. My question is: What is the maximum size an IKEA Platsa shelving unit can reach?

Specifically, I want to know the maximum height, width, and depth achievable by combining multiple individual modules without facing stability issues or installation restrictions.

I understand that Platsa is a modular system, but how many modules can reasonably be stacked or placed side by side? Are there official specifications or practical experiences that could help me with the planning?

I look forward to your assessments and tips, especially from anyone who has already built a very large Platsa shelving unit.

Interesting question, because it actually reflects IKEA’s philosophy—that everything can be customized individually, with no fixed upper limit. However, what’s technically possible is usually limited by common sense and safety considerations.

I would say the biggest issue with a large Platsa combination isn’t the number of modules, but stability and safety. In practice, about five to six units stacked vertically is likely the maximum before it becomes noticeably unstable. In terms of width and depth, transport and self-assembly are the main limiting factors.

I wouldn’t be surprised if IKEA itself doesn’t officially provide maximum dimensions, probably to stay on the safe legal side.

The statement that there are no official limits is plausible, but it is important to look closely: IKEA provides specific guidelines in the Platsa assembly instructions regarding the maximum load per module and the secure wall attachment.

In my opinion, these are crucial factors to understand how large a shelving unit can realistically become.

- Height: The more modules stacked on top of each other, the greater the load and the risk of tipping over.

- Width: Wider configurations also need to be well supported, especially if the individual modules are not stabilized with cross braces.

If I remember the assembly instructions correctly, usually no more than two to three modules can be stacked vertically without wall attachment; beyond that, fixation is mandatory.

The technically maximum solution would be possible through reinforcement and wall attachment but would then lose some of its DIY character.

In summary, from a technical and practical perspective:

- IKEA Platsa modules have a depth of about 40 cm (16 inches) and vary in height and width, typically measuring 38x38x40 cm (HxWxD) per module.
- The maximum stacking height without wall mounting is not officially specified; however, IKEA recommends a maximum assembly height of 190 cm (75 inches) for individual stacks.
- Wall mounting is mandatory for taller combinations to prevent tipping hazards.
- There is no strict width limit from the manufacturer, but the effort required for stabilization increases proportionally with the width.

Based on my experience and available assembly instructions: a shelving unit with 3–4 modules in height and 2–4 in width is stable and practical; the maximum depth is fixed by the type of shelving unit.

For significantly larger combinations, additional safety measures should be planned.

This results in a maximum of approximately 190 cm (75 inches) in height (possible higher with wall mounting), 160 cm (63 inches) in width, and 40 cm (16 inches) in depth. Anything beyond this becomes impractical or unsafe.

The Platsa system is modular, but it should not exceed 190 cm (75 inches) in height without wall mounting.

If done safely, you can connect as many modules side by side as the room allows in width. The depth remains between 38-40 cm (15-16 inches).

Wall mounting is mandatory for greater heights.

Exactly! And with wall anchoring, the sky is practically the limit, you could say. You just need to make sure that the wall provides a secure and stable support.

With a bit of careful planning and installation, the Platsa world becomes like a Lego set for adults. That level of flexibility really makes the shelving unit desirable!
