Hello everyone, I am currently considering buying some IKEA Platsa furniture for my twins’ bedroom. An important question for me is: How safe are IKEA Platsa products for children? Specifically, I am concerned about factors such as stability, absence of harmful substances, tip-over safety, and injury risks from sharp edges or corners. I am also interested in whether the assembly instructions are sufficient to build the furniture safely for children, or if professional knowledge is needed. Are there any users who have Platsa furniture in a children’s room and can share experiences regarding these safety aspects? Any information, including potential issues or proven measures to improve safety, would be very helpful. Thank you!

PLATSA furniture is sturdy when properly assembled. To protect your children, it should always be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping. Low in harmful substances according to EU standards.

IKEA PLATSA furniture complies with common European safety standards. It is made from wood-based panels certified according to EN 13986, which minimizes formaldehyde emissions. The furniture can be assembled using plug-in and screw connections and, due to its height, should always be secured to the wall with the included wall fasteners to prevent tipping accidents. The design features relatively sharp corners and edges, so using corner protectors may be advisable. A practical recommendation: bedroom furniture for children should be regularly checked for loose screws.

I assembled PLATSA myself. The instructions are simple and clear, but you should work precisely to ensure stability. Wall anchoring is mandatory, especially when children are present.

I would like to make a somewhat critical remark: Just because furniture meets EU standards does not automatically mean it is childproof. Many pieces can tip over if wall attachments are not installed properly or if the wall structure is unsuitable. This is a common safety concern. Although harmful substances are minimal, extra caution is advised for children with sensitive respiratory systems or allergies. Even more important is whether the surface and edges are truly child-friendly – it is essential to carefully check that no splinters or sharp edges can come loose. A practical approach is regular inspections and retrofitting, for example with edge protectors and anti-slip pads.

I think it’s great that wall mounting is highlighted here. I used to be unsure myself because my children often climb on things. The installation instructions for PLATSA were clear, but I still had to make some adjustments. After securing it with brackets and metal plates, it now feels quite safe. What I personally did in addition: I added soft edge protectors to all edges, which gives me a better feeling when the kids are playing in the room.
