Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a Billy shelf from IKEA, and now I need to secure this piece of furniture to make it completely safe for small children.

My question is: What is the best way to make BILLY childproof? I am thinking about possible anti-tip measures, preventing finger traps, and securely storing items at the child’s height. Are there any proven methods or accessories specifically designed for this purpose?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Wall mounting with strong anchors suitable for drywall panels as well as edge protectors on sharp corners.

Additionally, door locks or security devices, if available.

Store heavy items at the bottom.

In addition to the mentioned fastenings and protective measures, I recommend regularly checking the load-bearing capacity of the fixings, as screws can loosen due to leaning pressure.

It is also important to use so-called "anti-slip pads" under the furniture, especially if the shelf is placed on smooth floors, to prevent slipping.

When it comes to child safety locks for doors, you should choose tested and certified products that are easy to install but difficult for children to open.

Attach the supplied wall mounting bracket to securely prevent the shelf from tipping over.

I want to emphasize this point again. Especially for BILLY shelves, which are relatively tall, a solid wall attachment is the most important safety measure.

In your case, with drywall (plasterboard) walls, it makes sense to choose fasteners rated for heavy loads and child safety.

Additionally, ensure that the shelf stands on a level floor and that there are no gaps between the shelf and the floor or wall that children could use to pry it open.

The combination of wall mounting with appropriate anchors, edge protectors, and door locks provides the best protection.
