ᐅ How can I make my BILLY bookshelf child-safe and stable?

I own a BILLY bookcase from IKEA that I would like to make childproof and, above all, stable to prevent any accidents at home. My children are still quite young and tend to climb on furniture or pull on the sides. My question is: What specific methods or products can you recommend to secure a BILLY bookcase against tipping over and to generally reinforce its structure, without making it too complicated or time-consuming? Are there, for example, reliable wall anchors, shelf reinforcements, or corner protectors? I look forward to tips based on personal experience!

Also, to reinforce the shelves, you can check the back panel: sometimes it can be secured with additional screws, which greatly increases stability.

Exactly, if you need it really sturdy, I recommend fixing the back panel with extra screws and also installing a cross brace on the back. This significantly improves the cabinet’s resistance to twisting. You can use narrow battens for this and screw them in at the top and in the middle. It’s important to secure the wall mounting with strong anchors, otherwise the internal reinforcement won’t help much. This way, the shelf will hold up safely under load.

To be honest, I think it’s almost overkill to reinforce BILLY that much. This piece has been in use for decades and holds up quite well even when mounted minimally. If child safety is the main concern, a good wall attachment plus normal weight at the bottom is usually enough. The additional cross braces are nice, but more for people who want to play it extra safe or for professionals. I wonder if it might be better to choose a sturdier shelving unit for kids, rather than such a lightweight system? You can also get solid wood shelves, after all. But of course, that’s a matter of personal preference 😉

Well, better safe than sorry! 🙂 Especially with small children, many risks can be avoided, and I believe a bit more stability only brings advantages. You can always remove the reinforcements once the kids are older. I equipped my shelf this way for the little ones and feel completely at ease. By the way, we also put on these flexible edge protectors – really great stuff!

I would like to share my experience as well: I secured my BILLY shelf in the children’s room by attaching it to the wall with two metal brackets. Additionally, I fixed the shelves in place with small metal clips so they cannot slide out. The corners are covered with transparent edge protectors that can be glued on. This helped me a lot because I was sometimes worried that my little daughter might bump into the corners. Sometimes these precautions may feel a bit excessive, but they are important for the safety of little ones and provide peace of mind. 🙂

You are absolutely right. Safety is our top priority, even if it makes the shelf a bit more complicated to assemble. Thanks for the tip about edge protectors; I will definitely give that a try.

That sounds very interesting. I think I will look into that and maybe add two cross braces to increase stability. Keeping it as simple as possible, but effective.

One final question: Does anyone know of special kits or accessories that can be purchased or ordered online specifically for BILLY to improve stability and safety? Or do you have to buy the parts (brackets, edge protectors, etc.) individually?
