Hello everyone, I hope someone here has experience with Billy bookcases from Ikea: My specific question is whether these shelves can be used safely without the recommended wall anchoring. I want to use a bookcase in a room where no wall plugs for anchoring are allowed, and I’m wondering if the shelf will still be stable enough to hold books and other items without tipping over or becoming a safety hazard. Are there any tips, reliable experiences, or perhaps alternative securing methods? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for all the feedback! In summary, I realize that wall anchoring is recommended for good reason and plays a significant role in preventing tipping. It is especially important to me that safe use is ensured even with lighter loads and in a household without small children. Therefore, I am considering placing the shelf back-to-back with a sturdy large cabinet and securing it with non-slip mats. Do you have any thoughts on this idea?

That sounds reasonable and is a good alternative when wall mounting is not possible. Especially in such setups, the risk of tipping is significantly reduced. Be sure that the floor is completely level and that the non-slip mats provide good grip. A small tip: securing the whole assembly additionally with a few tension straps to the large cabinet further increases safety. 🙂

Absolutely correct what dijan writes. Especially in living situations where wall mounting is not permitted, such improvised safety measures are often the best solution. The important thing is to check regularly: simply verify from time to time whether the shelf is still stable and does not wobble. And yes, anti-slip mats provide a great base but mainly help on smooth surfaces.
