ᐅ How can you tell if a BILLY shelf is properly aligned?

Hello everyone, I recently got a Billy bookcase from Ikea and want to make sure it is properly aligned. My specific question is: How can you tell if a Billy bookcase is straight and correctly positioned, especially when you don’t have professional tools at hand? What exactly should you pay attention to, which simple tools might help, and what are common mistakes to avoid when aligning it? I want the bookcase to be both visually appealing and functionally stable. Thanks in advance for your tips!

The question about uneven floors is very relevant, thanks for following up. The Billy shelf is generally quite tolerant of minor floor irregularities, but since it is made of wood or wood-based materials, prolonged or strong pressure from one side can cause it to warp or stand unevenly.

I recommend the following systematic approach:

1. First, check the height and alignment of each furniture leg using a short spirit level or a square (a smartphone app can also work).
2. Use furniture shims or felt pads to compensate for small differences. Important: shims need to be stable and secure.
3. Securing the unit to the wall is essential because it stabilizes the entire shelf and prevents it from tipping or wobbling under load.

Perfect vertical alignment is important because otherwise the shelf may appear visually crooked and the shelves will be unevenly loaded, which can cause deformation over time.

To be very precise, you can use a carpenter’s square or a cross level to check whether the side panels are perpendicular to the wall.

Compensate for floor unevenness easily with furniture shims. Place a level on the side, then adjust underneath. Don’t forget to secure it to the wall.

I know the feeling when you think you’ve done everything correctly, but the shelf still somehow looks crooked. It can definitely make you wonder if you missed something.

For me, it helps a lot to watch the shelf for a while after assembling it, before you fill all the compartments. If it settles or wobbles anywhere, you can adjust it again. A bit of patience really makes a difference. And the feeling that everything is stable gives you much more confidence.

I know that feeling well! Sometimes you place a book on the top edge and only then notice if the shelf is truly level.

A small tip: place a long ruler or board horizontally on it to check the alignment. It’s simple but often a good double-check! 😊

How important is the exact vertical alignment relative to the wall in this context?

The vertical alignment to the wall is only relevant insofar as the shelf stands securely and stably. It does not need to be perfectly at a 90-degree angle to the millimeter, as small deviations hardly affect its function. The main point is that the BILLY shelf is secured to the wall and does not feel unstable.

A slight offset, for example caused by an uneven or rough floor, is common and acceptable. As long as it sits flush against the wall and does not wobble, it can be considered properly aligned.

I would like to add that using the correct screws and wall anchors is important for wall mounting. Especially with drywall, you need to use suitable anchors to ensure a secure fixing.

Also, it is important to carefully follow Ikea’s instructions: The BILLY bookshelf is usually not stable enough on its own if it is simply placed loosely. Attaching it to the wall prevents accidents caused by tipping.
