Hello everyone, I recently got a Billy bookcase from Ikea and want to make sure it is properly aligned. My specific question is: How can you tell if a Billy bookcase is straight and correctly positioned, especially when you don’t have professional tools at hand? What exactly should you pay attention to, which simple tools might help, and what are common mistakes to avoid when aligning it? I want the bookcase to be both visually appealing and functionally stable. Thanks in advance for your tips!
The correct alignment of a BILLY shelf depends on both the vertical and horizontal positioning of the shelves. First, you should check whether the unit is placed against the wall and secured using the included wall fasteners to ensure stability. Then, it is recommended to use a spirit level to verify that the side panels are perfectly vertical.
Common issues often arise from uneven floors, incorrect installation of the back panel, or improperly aligned wall fasteners. If a spirit level is not available, a smartphone level app can be used to obtain approximate measurements.

Very good question! 😄 I remember spending hours trying to position my BILLY so it wouldn’t look crooked – almost like a lighthouse. So: use your phone, as Paxton already mentioned, since it often has a level app (keyword: digital level). Just place it on the surface or hold it against the side of the shelf and check if the reading is at zero.
If the shelf wobbles, it can also help to put small felt pads or furniture shims under the feet – it’s easy to overlook those. ;-)

It’s great to see this topic being discussed here! 😊 I love my BILLY shelf, but it certainly looks better when it stands properly. So, pay attention to the back panel! Sometimes it isn’t fitted quite right, and that really catches your eye.
My tip: Stand directly in front of the shelf and look at it from different angles. If it appears to lean or tilt visually, it’s usually due to the alignment or the floor surface. And of course, using a spirit level will help you get it perfectly straight! 🙂

If you have carpet flooring, this can sometimes cause shelves to tip. A small tip: place non-slip rubber mats under the feet to improve stability.
Adjusting the screws on the side panels can also help compensate for minor unevenness.

Thank you for the tips so far. I wanted to clarify that my floor is unfortunately not completely level – there are slight uneven spots.
Does anyone have experience with how sensitive the BILLY shelf is to such floor irregularities? Can leveling be easily managed with simple solutions in these cases, or should more robust measures be taken (e.g., floor shims)?
And how important is it, in this context, for the shelf to be perfectly plumb relative to the wall?
