ᐅ BILLY shelf wobbles after I added shelves: Why?

Hello everyone,

I have a Billy shelving unit from IKEA that has been very stable so far. However, after adding some additional shelves, I noticed that the unit now wobbles a bit and doesn’t stand as firmly as before. I installed the shelves exactly in the designated positions and checked that they are properly seated.

My question is: Why does the BILLY shelving unit wobble after adding shelves? Is there a technical or structural reason why its stability might be affected by this?

I would appreciate any advice, including how to best fix the problem if possible.

One idea: Have you checked if the rear wall is properly aligned over the entire surface and not slightly detached in some areas? Even small gaps can contribute to wobbling.

If this is not possible, sometimes an additional wall fastener can help improve stability.

Absolutely yes, especially with tall shelves.

Thanks, that’s a good point. The shelf is about 2 meters (6.6 feet) high. I will try to better level the adjustable feet or place something underneath.

That’s typical of insufficient lateral stability.

I haven’t changed anything on the side panels yet, but it’s quite possible that the shelf twists a bit more with additional shelves.

I’m also considering adding an extra wall mounting, even though I haven’t used one so far.

In summary:
- Level the base surface
- Properly secure the back panel
- Place the shelves on all metal pins
- Optionally use wall mounting

That should help.

Try gently pressing the shelf against the wall at the lower corner and secure it there with small spacers or washers. This can significantly reduce the wobbling.

Also important: The metal pins supporting the floors must be perfectly straight. If they become slightly bent due to frequent repositioning, the stability will be compromised. It is worth checking.

Today, I tried to level the base area using small shims and tightened the back panel again. I also installed the wall mounting.

Result: The wobbling is significantly reduced, almost unnoticeable. Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips, especially regarding leveling the floor and securing the back panel.

If the problem occurs again, I will pay close attention to the metal pins.
