Hello everyone, I am planning to install an Ikea Metod shelving system at my home. I have different wall types in my apartment: a load-bearing concrete wall in the living room, a drywall partition in the bedroom, and a masonry interior wall in the hallway. Since I want to mount the shelves securely to withstand the weight of cabinets and shelves and ensure safety in everyday use, I would like to know: What fixing methods and types of wall plugs are best suited for each of these wall types? Which screws and spacers would you recommend to prevent slipping or even pull-out? Is there anything special to consider when mounting the Metod rails to the wall? I look forward to your detailed advice and experiences.

For concrete walls, I prefer heavy-duty anchors with stainless steel screws, which hold extremely securely. For drywall, I recommend special hollow wall anchors that expand. For masonry interior walls, classic anchors work well—depending on the material, either nylon or universal anchors. Always secure rails with at least two suitable anchors per fixing point to ensure everything stays stable.

Hello Tinotan, your question is very precise, which is already very helpful. In general: For concrete walls, heavy-duty or metal screws with appropriate anchors that can support the weight are suitable. For drywall (plasterboard) walls, make sure to use hollow wall anchors, as regular anchors will not hold. It is always important not to exceed the maximum load capacity of the shelf and to install the mounting brackets of the Metod rails on the back exactly level and at the correct distance. Have you already checked the thickness of your drywall panels? That affects the choice of hollow wall anchors.

Hello Tinotan, to address your very important and detailed question: For the concrete wall, I strongly recommend using heavy-duty anchors, preferably chemical anchors or mechanical expansion anchors of the appropriate length to ensure the load remains securely supported over time. Drilling should be done with a suitable masonry drill bit, and the anchor holes should be cleaned out before installation to ensure optimal hold. For drywall panels, caution is needed: I usually use toggle anchors that open behind the wall and cover a large area, since simple drywall anchors often get stuck or cannot support the weight. The thickness of the panel is essential – it’s best to measure it beforehand with a caliper. For masonry interior walls, I would opt for classic nylon or universal anchors, which should be fixed with screws of at least 6mm (1/4 inch) diameter to adequately support the weight. Another important point regarding metal rails (Metod rails) is that the rail must be installed perfectly straight; twisting can be avoided by using enough fixing points. I would also pay attention to the placement of the brackets according to the wall structure. Additionally, using only battens or other auxiliary constructions between the rail and the wall is not a good idea, as this can cause uneven load on the shelf and may result in it hanging crooked later.

In my opinion, the entire Ikea instruction manual is usable, but it can be too rigid at times. It’s better not to follow the steps blindly but to also check the wall itself. There are walls where even the best heavy-duty anchors won’t hold if the surface is crumbling or damp. Therefore, it’s advisable to test the wall’s stability beforehand using a strong magnet, a stud finder, and a hammer.

I stand by my view that flexibility and an individual approach are underrated. If you just follow the instructions by the book, you risk the shelf becoming loose again after a few months. And yes, when working with drywall (plasterboard), I would never rely solely on toggle anchors; instead, I would also support the shelf with a wall bracket, even if Ikea doesn’t specify this.

That’s a good point. I generally recommend using frame constructions or reinforcements for lighter walls whenever possible. Especially with the Metod system, which can become heavy depending on the modules, accurately assessing the wall’s load-bearing capacity is crucial. Usually, Ikea advises using the supplied mounting hardware, but for specific wall types like your drywall, additional measures can provide extra security. When choosing screws, it’s also best to select corrosion-resistant materials, such as galvanized or stainless steel variants, to ensure long-term durability.
