Hello everyone, I am planning to install an Ikea Metod shelving system at my home. I have different wall types in my apartment: a load-bearing concrete wall in the living room, a drywall partition in the bedroom, and a masonry interior wall in the hallway. Since I want to mount the shelves securely to withstand the weight of cabinets and shelves and ensure safety in everyday use, I would like to know: What fixing methods and types of wall plugs are best suited for each of these wall types? Which screws and spacers would you recommend to prevent slipping or even pull-out? Is there anything special to consider when mounting the Metod rails to the wall? I look forward to your detailed advice and experiences.
In summary, regarding the topic of securely mounting Ikea Metod shelves on different wall types, I would like to add the following:
- Concrete walls: Use anchors with an appropriate diameter and length (at least 8 mm diameter, minimum 80 mm length). Heavy-duty anchors or expansion anchors are ideal. Drill with a masonry drill bit and adjust the anchor depth precisely.
- Drywall (plasterboard) walls: Only professional toggle, flap, or cavity anchors, micro clips, or anchors can verify whether the board is thick and stable enough. Additional reinforcement, such as a wooden structure mounted behind the board, increases stability.
- Masonry interior walls: Depending on the material and condition, use nylon or universal anchors and screws with a sufficient diameter (minimum 6 mm). It is important not only to pay attention to the anchor type but also to strictly follow the correct drill hole size so that the anchor can expand or secure optimally.
- The Metod rails should always be installed horizontally to prevent later tension or uneven hanging of the shelving unit.
For complete assurance, you can perform a simple pull test on the fixtures before installation. This allows any necessary adjustments to be made.
