Good morning everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA Metod drawer runners in the kitchen: several are damaged, causing the drawers to no longer slide smoothly and easily. My question is: how do I properly replace defective IKEA Metod drawer runners? I am looking for a detailed guide including information on which parts are needed, how to correctly remove and install the drawer runners, and what to pay special attention to in order to ensure everything works stable and without wobbling afterwards. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Hello, as a general rule, you should carefully pull the old drawer completely out of the cabinet during disassembly. Afterwards, the runners, which are usually mounted on the sides or underneath the drawer, can typically be removed either by simply pulling them out or by unscrewing a few screws. IKEA often uses the so-called soft-close mechanism with click fasteners for Metod drawers. It is advisable to note down the exact model number of the drawer runners or take a photo (if possible) and order precisely this replacement part from IKEA. When reinstalling, always ensure that the runners are perfectly parallel on both sides and that the fasteners are securely screwed in to prevent any wobbling.

Pull the drawer completely out. Loosen the glides on the left and right, usually by removing screws. Pull out the damaged glides. Insert new ones and tighten the screws. Reinstall the drawer.

I’m happy to provide more detailed information: IKEA Metod drawer runners usually consist of two parts – a guide rail attached to the drawer and a pair of rails installed inside the cabinet. When you have pulled out the drawer, first take a close look at how the runner is fixed: some types don’t use screws but instead rely on clips or locking tabs that can be released with gentle finger pressure. Be especially careful not to damage any plastic parts here. For removal, it’s recommended to take out both rails, as reinstalling the drawer without doing so can cause problems – the drawer needs to be guided properly to avoid the rails jamming. Generally, you can loosen the screws with a Phillips or Torx screwdriver. Installing the new runners is done in reverse order, but an important tip: work very precisely and check before hanging the drawer that the guides are perfectly aligned using a spirit level or measuring tape, otherwise the drawer may run hard or stick. A common issue is bent runners, so replacing them is often a good idea. One more question for you: which type of Metod drawer runners do you have exactly – full-extension or standard? That will make the instructions more precise.

The drawers are full-extension, with metal runners underneath, which I understand are called full-extension slides. However, some metal parts are bent or partly broken. Can I easily replace the entire slide or only individual parts? Do I need special replacement parts for this?

With fully extendable Metod drawer slides, it is usually recommended to replace the entire slide as a single unit rather than just small individual plastic parts, as these are often difficult to source separately. Although a complete new slide costs a bit more, it ensures more stable long-term performance and prevents future issues. When ordering, you should know the exact model of the Metod drawer, as there are different lengths and weight capacities available. It is also crucial to be very precise with the correct positioning during installation – small misalignments often cause jamming or uneven extension.
